[Quote by: jeffreysg] Ahhh, newbies. Don't get me wrong, but I really don't understand why we have to act as though Doctor Who has never existed before 2005. I know they want to draw in a new audience, but some of us have been with the series for decades. I think for the most part, if a newbie sees something they are not sure about, they will just gloss it over themselves or actually go look into it. Maybe they might even discover the older episodes and get interested in those as well? Hmm, yea I'm on a soapbox. Sorry everyone, unless anyone agrees with me then I mean every word of it. |

I totally agree with you...in theory. But I also agree with either Louis or Ken when they said in the podcast that they want the show to be around for a while. Would you prefer to have one or two seasons of ultimate Doctor Who geek fanboy television referencing SIDRATs and the blue crystals of Metebelis 3 and e-space, or another twenty years of quality Doctor Who that had to slowly integrate another generation of fans into the fold? Now that we're getting a new companion, the Doctor will have a brand new sounding board for the kind of expositional dialogue that will help clear things up for the new fans. |

I'm going "Full Circle" and putting my avatar back to what it was when I first joined. :)

Yes, I unerstand that rational, and no I'm not suggesting each and every episode be drenched in references. I think School Reunion was great. I would just hate to see it used so sparingly as though the past seasons never existed. Does that make sense? Ahh, well maybe I need a bit more sleep. LOL |

I completely agree. As I said time and time again, I don't agree with the notion that references to anything already established prior to 2005 would "alienate" new audience members... As I became a Doctor Who fan when it almost had 20 years of history... and any references to the years prior to Tom Baker (at that time) did not alienate me, it just made me more interested in it. I was not turned off by the The Five Doctors in 1983 even though at that time I had not seen any 1st Doctor, 2nd Doctor, or even 3rd Doctor stories yet. It just made me more curious about them and their adventures that were still unseen and "new" material for me.
Cheers,

LOL... Hopefully in the next couple of days. It still has to be edited together.
Having to work for a "living" keeps on interfering with my podcasting duties.

Not necessarily a problem.
Just like when asked what Torchwood means, no one's probably going to answer, why does UNIT actually have to be identified as "United Nations Intelligence Taskforce?" UNIT is enough.
No one ever asked what KAOS stood for, but it was obvious they were an evil organization bent on destroying world peace.
They used the UNIT logo in series one, it would surprise me to find out that this urban legend was true - that the UN objected.
And besides, what are they going to do, put sanctions on Russ Davies? :-)
Seriously, that story sounds completely unfounded to me. I'd love to see some link with the story.
Sean.

I agree they can easily get away with saying that UNIT is a global military and scientific organization tasked with investigating and combating possible threats of non-terrestrial origin. But "UNIT" is also obviously an acronym. I don't think that an appearance by UNIT would alienate any new fans of the show, but I can understand the reasoning why they may not want to include too much "inside fan" information until the show has a stronger fan base and the show is more fully entrenched in the program schedule.

Ok, take this with as much salt as desired. I found where I originally read this, at Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Intelligence_Taskforce
Following the broadcast of the 2005 series, in his regular column in Doctor Who Magazine #360 (August 2005), new series executive producer Russell T. Davies explained that the United Nations were no longer happy to be associated with the organisation, and its full name could not now be used. However, the "UNIT" and "UN" abbreviations can be used, as long as it is not explained what the letters stand for. It is unclear how this affects UNIT appearances in the various spin-off media.
...
For the new television series, BBC created a faux website for UNIT at www.unit.org.uk, complete with "easter eggs" that can be accessed by the reader with the passwords "bison" and "buffalo" (the latter mentioned on screen in World War Three). "Bison" uncovers a section which provides UNIT point-of-view reports about various events in the 2005 series, although its canonical status, like the spin-off media, is debatable. Due to the objections by the United Nations as noted above, the letters "UN" are no longer expanded to "United Nations" on the website.
If someone has access to Doctor Who Magazine #360 he or she can verify if this is accurate. |
