After listening to Louis and James talk about Season 1 of Torchwood in Podshock 63, I wanted to ask a question...primarily to Louis, but really to everyone who has seen it. Louis, I think you rated the two-part finale of TW 4-weavils. My question is, in your personal rating scheme, do weavils and TARDIS groans match up one for one? In other words, do you think a Torchwood ep that merits 4 weavils is as good as a Who ep that gets 4 TARDIS groans? Or is there an "exchange rate", like a 4-weavil Torchwood is about the same as a 3-groan Who? I'm just curious. To use your Trek TNG comparison, I personally think the best episode of Torchwood season 1 isn't much better than a mediocre Next Gen season 1 episode. To be fair, though, it's been a while since I've seen any of the first season Next Gen episodes.  |

I'm inclined to say that I think the worst episode of Star Trek TNG is better than any Torchwood episode, because I really cared about the characters of TNG. Even in the first season. After Encounter At Farpoint, I would have followed Picard and crew to where no man has gone before (ba-dump)just because I thought that Riker, Picard, Laforge and Data all had a great dynamic. Maybe I'm the exception to the rule, though. |

I actually started typing something more like that, but I sat back and tried to think of the really bad eps of season 1. It made me realize that it had been a while, and I could be forgetting something really atrocious.
Having said that, though, if I remember my Trek trivia correctly there was a writers strike during the beginning of season two, and I think the really bad eps were in that period. I'm having vague memories of an early season 2 ep where Troi wakes up pregnant. That was originally a script written for the earlier new Trek series that evolved into The Motion Picture. Instead of Troi, it was the bald Deltan chick that got pregnant.
Watch this will now suddenly take a right-turn into a discussion of Trek vs. Torchwood, and no one will comment on the question of weavils vs. TARDIS groans.  |

Wow. The first season of TNG is nearly unwatchable! As a first season (which normally don't shine as nicely as more polished further seasons) Torchwood beat TNG in my book.
Now TNG from seasons 3-5 or so... that's hard for any show to beat.
