As a final note, please be better next week. Please don't make this another K9 and co , or even worse, another 'Robin Hood'. I beg you! |
|
Firstly - please don't say you think it's as bad as Robin Hood - that is dire, with miscasting and those awful modern-day references.
...
So all in all it could have been much better - but it was no 'Robin Hood!'
Cheers, daveac |

Thank fully - it's not that bad (YET) I'm back to reserving my judgement now though. After the first week I was all excited with my expectaions upturned, oh well, there's no where left to go but down if you're already at the top! So maybe low expectation isn't such a bad thing.
And on a side note not necessarily for this board - Yes. Robin Hood is abysmal. There is no limit on how good it feels to say that out loud.

| [Quote by: Jagoscourage] I feel like I'm swimming against the stream in saying that I like where this show is going. I will agree that they need to stick to their own guidelines, but right now one off-kilter story element isn't a problem for me. |
|
Funny, most people in the "newsgroup" who can often be quite down on Who and had lots of bad things to say about the first two Torchwoods really liked this episode. I liked it a lot. I hope this is the way the show is going, and not the way of episode 2.
| [Quote by: Jagoscourage] I am in the minority in liking the firing range scene. Yes, it was slightly awkward and out of place, but only slightly. The scene was about building the bond between Gwen and Jack. It focused on the establishment of trust and breaking down the barriers that allow Jack to connect with his team members. One of the major questions being developed in these first few episodes is how Gwen will adapt her normal life to her life in Torchwood. |
|
As to that scene, I thought it was a throw-away. It wasn't vital, and it wasn't strictly a time-filler. It could easily have been removed to almost no effect. But the same can be said of many scenes in Doctor Who or any other TV show.
Read a book. Watch a movie. Not every scene that happens is vital to the plot. Often we spend plenty of time in any story having tea, or walking through the park, or training up on weapons. It's just the way good storytelling goes.
Especially, as you say, to show the strengthening bond between characters.
It was not a hideous thing. And the show itself was the best so far, which isn't high praise yet since it's only episode 3.
| [Quote by: Jagoscourage] In Who, Rose is young and easily swayed. She is still full of her dreams and focuses upon those dreams. Gwen is an older woman with deep connections to a person that she is drifting away from. THe scenes with her boyfriend are touching because you can feel the gap widening despite their best efforts. Subtle shifts will give this more weight over time. My biggest problem is that we haven't learned enough about her boyfriend, although we may see that soon enough. |
|
Yeah, I think we'll see things happening as Gwen continues to be mysterious about her job and spending less and less time with him.
I'd also like to see them connect the dots back to Gwennyth, who many speculate is a direct ancestor of Gwen's. Which could mean psychic ability may present itself.
| [Quote by: Jagoscourage] Once again we are finding that this board is full of diverse opinion! I disagree with a lot of other people's points on this episode but that's why this is fun! I'm definitely in the camp of letting this one run awhile. I can tell you this. I was ready for this show to be anything. After three episodes, I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season. In contrast, I am a huge Aaron Sorkin fan and I find Studio 60 to be sermonizing and arrogant. In light of that, the show still has time to grow, as does Torchwood. Every new show treads over old ground and blazes new trails. |
|
I'm a huge Sorkin fan. Sports Night was perhaps the best TV series on TV in a decade, and they cancelled it. And now they're making noise about cancelling Studio 60 which I was quite liking for most of the same reasons I liked Sports Night. That, and I'm a huge fan of SNL, and would love to see someone finally do a "behind-the-scenes" that may actually have some truth in it.
| [Quote by: Jagoscourage] Next week, Cyberladies... where oh where does this one go?!? |
|
Yeah, that's going to be interesting...
Sean. |

I agree... this is not the same Captain Jack we got know and love from the 2005 series of Doctor Who. Supposedly, he isn't the same since becoming immortal.
|
|
To quote Elizabeth Gaskell "Something has happened to vex him." - we still aren't sure what happened to Jack between being on the satallite & rebuilding earth - and how he managed to go back in time to a point just after the big cyberman/dalek invasion thing - (or a wee bit further back, just in time to get ahold of the doctor's severed hand which he keeps alive in a jar) Now, not that you can believe everything you read, but wikipedia says Jack'll be back for season 3, but as Jack's already said he's looking for "a certain kind of doctor" you could take that to mean that he didn't do his time travelling in the TARDIS anyhow.
Jack's probably traumatized and unhappy because he can't die, and apparently doesn't sleep (should we even take that comment literally?) he's very alone in the world - now a member of the "You can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can't with you" club.
Now here's a wild thought - Captain Jack experienced part of the time war and that's how he got back in time again and traumatized and is all "21st century changes everything." ah well just a thought |

Dr Who and Torchwood actor link.
I didn't spot this but for anyone who doesn't check out Digital Spy
here
VERENCE posts:-
'John Normington appreared twice the old Dr Who series
He was Trau Morgus in The Caves of Androzani and Trevor Sigma in The Happiness Patrol
In Ep3 of Torchwood he played the grown-up version of the evacuee boy that Gwen saw outside the train station'
There are lot's of fans here for 'The Caves of Androzani' - anyone kicking themselves for not spotting the actor?
Cheers, daveac
EDIT:- From this side view it's more obvious (it's a zoomed in clip so not high quality - from the front views he doesn't look as recognisable) :-

Thanks for the tip-off... I didn't make the connection when I saw him, but now that you point it out, I do recognize him now from The Caves of Androzani.

Just finished watching Cyberwoman. Haven't read any of the posts here yet, but just wanted to say one thing...
A top secret alien hunting organization beyond governments has basketball backboards made up with their name and logo???
- edit -
Doh! Put this in the wrong thread.
Sorry. |
