Episode 8: Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane? Part 2 Views: 1108
     Tuesday, November 06 2007 @ 02:32 AM EST

The conclusion to this story raised my opinion of part 1. I liked the redemption of Andrea Yates. The Trickster is an interesting villain and I suspect that we have not seen the last of him. Given that the Slitheen and the Graske are both Doctor Who monsters, I would suspect that the Trickster will soon be back on our screens, but in Doctor Who.

Now, the whole using missiles/bombs to shoot down an asteroid/meteor is ridiculous. A number of big budget American films have made this mistake and it gets repeated here. The debris cloud from a shattered rock would cause more damage to the planet than the single impact. Instead of hitting one area there would be a string of impacts as the Earth rotates. One just needs to look at the lessons we learned from comet Shoemaker/Levy 9. The method used by Mr. Smith—deflection—is more plausible, though the lack of details makes it easier to suspend disbelief.

Other than that nit, I really enjoyed this story. This series has been very good so far.

Sure, Taras, but I got the impression the missile attack was simply a PR stunt to placate the public, to avoid further panic until it was too late. That's what a real government would do... pretend to do something even when nothing could possibly help.

I found it hard to believe Mr. Smith's intervention so late in the game. With minutes left, that meteor's deflection will certainly lead to many questions about how it happened, and an investigation that might lead to Mr. Smith.

But yes, I really loved this two-parter. The whole Andrea Yates thing was awesome...

Any relation to Mike Yates I wonder?

I liked the fact that she even turned on Dad at the end and agreed to have him wiped out too, but only when Sarah Jane talked to her did she change her mind.

I liked the alien, and obviously they're going to tie it back to the Doctor, probably in the coming season. Also, though, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Doctor appear in SJA either in the last episode of this season or sometime next season. (Did it get picked up for another season? I hope so. Love it so far!)

    Sean.

One solid hope is worth a cartload of uncertainties.

At ten minutes to impact, placating the public would have minimal effect. The whole point was that the "meteor" was not detectable until it was too late to do anything about it. I expect that the government would be looking for shelter at that point.

Yes, there were a few nit-picky things about the meteor I didn't like either (being an astronomer I am sensitive to things like that!). Among other things, they could see it in the sky 10 minutes before impact, and it was TINY (it looked no bigger than a van compared to the SJ's house). A small meteor like that would not destroy even a city, never mind the entire Earth.

That being said, this was by far my favorite episode so far this series. Loved the discussion about the Doctor, the Graske, the time-travel stuff, and the revealing of SJ's secrets to Maria's dad at the end.

4 out of 5 for me.

Did you say "74,384,338 to 1 against"? That's my lucky number!

Yes, this is the my favourite story so far in the series (I haven't seen episode 9 yet as I write this). Good job. I noticed that it was directed by veteran Doctor Who director, Graham Harper too.

    Cheers,
    Louis

The same thoughts went through my mind as well.
