I'm glad that it is series 3 of Doctor Who they'll be showing. I had seen the preview and heard the voice over announcing the back to back timing, and I could have sworn they were showing series 2 YET AGAIN!
With as many times as BBCA has gone through series 2, I almost could have skipped buying the dvd set for myself and just watched it on tv over and over and over and over again. (yes, sarcasm is greatly intended) |

It is much better on HDNet... In glorious high definition and the way it was meant to be seen, without commercial interruption. I am just a little disappointed that is behind the start date for BBC America (which I believe is January 26th).
I suppose I will catch a "red-eye" to the UK to see them as they are transmitted, and then catch them on HDNet.
Hopefully at some point, the series (series 1 and 2 and any forthcoming ones) will be released in the US on one of the two HD disc formats available today.
Cheers,
Louis |

| I've been putting off getting the HD receiver from my cable company - this might be the deciding factor. Then maybe HDNet will also do the next Doctor Who in HD as well! |

That won't happen because DW is not shot in HD. It is shot in Standard Definition 16:9. |

Really? I could have sworn they were filming it in HD now... I know that they Runaway Bride was filmed in HD, so perhaps I just assumed that they continued it that way. |

Runaway Bride was not shot in HD. They are shot 16:9 which is where some of the confusion comes from. I cannot remember where the exact quote is, but it is somewhere on this forum from around the start of Series 3 where Phil Collinson explains that DW is not shot in HD because of all of the visual effects work required for the show and that if it was shot in HD then they would only be able to produce one series every two years. Whereas Torchwood is shot in HD because there are far less visual effects in the episodes.
The first two series were shot on Digital Betacam and series three (and beyond I'm assuming) are shot on DVCPro. These are both standard definition tape formats.
BTW, I am a Post Production Supervisor/Producer for various television shows, so I have been following this for awhile. Over a year ago there was an article in Post Magazine (again the link is on this forum somewhere) that had an interview with the Director of Photography for DW and he explained how everything is shot in SD and then in the spring of 2007 Phil Collinson provided more detail as to why that is. |

k. that makes sense. I think my confusion comes from my "red-eye flight" to see Runaway Bride. There is an BBC intro prior to the show and it says "BBC in HD." So, I jumped immediately to the conclusion that the show must be in HD. And we all know what happens when you assume.....
Thanks Derek! |

I couldn't find the links here on the forum, but I found one of the original links that I posted somewhere on the forum about DW not being shot in HD.
