Was it just me, or did anyone else find the comedy sketches (under the special features of "An Unearthly Child" just a tad tasteless and overdone?
It seemed to me that they were trying way too hard to have a laugh at where the series all began...but it was flat. I don't know, I thought it was more insulting than funny.
However, the slew of special documentaries on "The Edge of Destruction" helped wash away the bitter taste.
What does everyone else think? |

| I don't know, I thought that the pitch sketch was hilarious. I also thought the one where they kidnapped Peter Davison was great. That's just those guys brand of humor. One of them is David Walliams I think (I get he and Matt Lucas confused) from Little Britain, and that show has tons of hidden doctor who references, so I know he is a fan. I wasn't insulted at all. Tasteless? Yeah, a bit, but it was still okay in my book. |

You just reminded me of a poster I saw recently about something to do with Tom Baker, it said something along the lines of
Featuring Tom Baker - The voice of Little Britain!
Did you know?: Tom Baker also once played Doctor Who!

I think the Kidnapers sketch is the funniest of the three. The Pitch of fear is good its been edited though to remove remarkes made about Doctors 6 and 7. |

I had seen them before except for the piece in the Corridor... I know the other three were on "Doctor Who Night" back in 1999.
That is Mark Gatiss in there as well... (writer of The Unquiet Dead).
Yeah, unfortunately, "The Pitch of Fear" has been censored for the DVD release... cutting out a remark about how at the end of the series any actor with a equity card could play the part...

| I very much liked the extras on the "Edge of Destruction" DVD. "Doctor Who: Origins" was an incredibly fascinating documentary on the roots of the series. |

I've enjoyed these extras more than most other Who DVD extras. Normally the stuff like Sutek's life now stuff on "Pyramids of Mars" leaves me shaking my head and I can do without the Tardis cams but I liked the ones on this new set. The Kidnapped Peter Davison skit was great. The Origins was well done and I'd like to see more extras like this. It was chalked with a whole chunk of early Who history I knew nothing about.
There was a pretty good special on the History of RTD from the BBC that was shown at Gallifrey One. This was similar in terms of a researched special relating to Who. Anyone know if this made it to the Series One DVDs? |

I had been enjoying the documentary materials immensely in this set. I finished watching "Edge of Destruction" and was, shall we say, underwhelmed. The documentaries helped me understand what was useful about the serial and gave a great insight into the beginning - the Verity Lambert interviews and Ray Cusick interviews were particularly interesting, and William Russell looks like such an entertaining, happy grandfather...
And then, with NO WARNING, I'm being shown the climax of the 2005 series!!! Billie Piper is there on screen, Eccleston is shouting, it looks great, but I HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET! I didn't want to know that there was any connection between "Edge of Destruction" and the new series. Why didn't they tell us before the piece that it included Series One material? I ran away from the television shouting "la la la" until my partner turned it off for me. |

| I remember reading somewhere in a review or something that if you hadn't seen the eccleston series, not to watch the documentaries. But yeah, they really should have made that clearer. although, it honestly doesnt spoil anything HUGE. well, maybe, given your personal POV. |

| Well, yah, it does spoil the end of series 1, so that's pretty huge. Still I think it was a very appropriate inclusion. On both this one and "City of Death" (and to a much lesser degree, Sladen's comments in the commentary to "Genesis"), I think it's great how they're tying the RTD era in with the rest of the series. Very helpful. I look forward to similar treatment in "The Invasion" when it comes out. |
