I spent a little while thinking about the clip offered at the end of Podshock 18; the clip of Hartnell wishing all the viewers a merry Christmas. It occurred to me that he said it very quickly and I wondered if that was to get it in before any director yelled Cut! Due to time constraints and money, I would not be surprised if they left it, no matter how unhappy the director was.
Whatever the case, it goes to show the magic we first saw in the show was something beyond the writing! Here we are shown in no uncertain terms that William Hartnell himself carried that magic in his heart. For what it's worth, KUDOS to Willaim Hartnell. He knew that the magic was real for himself but it was the audience at home that kept the show alive and kept him as the Doctor.
BRAVO!!!

Hey Rassilon,
The same thing crossed my mind as well when I first heard it. It does seem like William Hartnell rushed to get it in before they stopped shooting the scene.
As for the magic, I recall William Hartnell stating something to the effect that once you have been touched by Doctor Who the magic stays with you for the rest of your life... (I can't recall the exact quote offhand now, but I believe it went something like that).

Yeah, when I first learned that William Hartnell had said that, it just rang so true with me as well. Because it pretty much sums up how I feel about Doctor Who...
There is a magic and I feel it does stay with you forever.

Back when channel 21 (a NY channel that I never had good reception with!) had been airing Doctor Who they did this little special/documentary. I can't find any official record of it, but a few times here I've noticed postings that have hinted at other people seeing it. To give a brief background, my neighbor was about to tape the first episode: An Unearthly Child for me. She, at least, had the channel pretty much crystal clear! So what appears to be a commercial for Doctor Who comes on and I tell her over the phone, ok, start taping! Little did I know the "commercial" was about an 11 minute documentary. I don't know how much was missed, but it couldn't be a lot.
Anyway, where I am going with this: it was fantastic. It clearly had to be around the late 80's because they cover all the Doctor's up to McCoy (this is where I got the hint that someone else here knows what I mean, because in the documentary McCoy is described as having a Chaplinesque way about him - they say this while he is running and pivotting on one foot and someone here recently described the same scene!). Anyhow, this long, boring diatribe was to say that the first time I heard the quote about Hartnell was on that special. And I quote (the documentary): "In the words of William Hartnell, the first Doctor, once you've been involved with the Doctor, some of the magic stays with you forever."
Now that I've bored you all, does anyone know what that was called? I have it on a very protected video tape, but I'd love to download it...
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I know exactly what you are talking about. WLIW (21) had originally shown it prior to the 7th Doctor... it was a promo for the Doctor Who series which summed up all the Doctors and the villians/aliens... They mostly used it for filler material between shows to fill the gaps between the end of a show and the top (or bottom) of the hour. It was then updated once Sylvester McCoy came along to include the 7th Doctor.
You didn't miss much because it is only a few minutes long... 11 minutes? Is even that long? It's basically a promo for the series. I assumed that WLIW acquired it from Lionheart (the US distributor of Doctor Who at the time) since I am sure no one at WLIW had the ability to create the piece themselves. So it may have been aired on other PBS stations as well.
Yes, that William Hartnell quote is in it... Though I think the "Chaplinesque" term was in reference to Troughton if I recall correctly... and Harpo Marx to describe the appearance of the 4th Doctor...
I too have it on analog VHS tape stored somewhere... Oh, I think I did transfer it to DVD for safer keeping, but it is still just a copy of the VHS material.
I haven't seen it offered digitally for download anywhere yet though.
