Thanks to Netflix, I've been enjoying Patrick Troughton.
My previous experiences with Patrick Troughton were episodes like "the three doctors," "the five doctors," and "The Two Doctors."
I recently watched "The Seeds of Doom" and "The Mind Warrior."
"The Seeds of Doom," while at the time lacked any tricky special effects, I really loved how they got around that. The story was still solid and the actors great. That Zoe! I'm 35 now, but I guess I never realized that most of the good Doctor's companions were very beautiful ladies. At any rate, the story was great to watch and it's always great to see what they thought the future would be.
"The Mind Warrior" was really cool. Talk about being very surreal and creepy! Great twist and turns.
I guess what I'm enjoying the most is the personality that Patrick Troughton brings to the role. I like his childlike expressions and how he genuinely get's worked up. There a quality there that is missed in later doctors.

If it wasn't for Patrick Troughton's reinvigoration of the character of the Doctor, we would not have 27 seasons/series plus one TV movie of the Doctor with two more series (at least) on the way. Patrick Troughton added a new dimension to the program. I did not discover Patrick's Doctor until quite late, but his portrayal is one of my favorites. I also love the childlike wonder he brought to the role. I have listened to the soundtracks of all the missing stories recently, and they contain some gems. I think the Macra Terror is stronger when the visuals are left to the imagination. But the creepiest moment of this era has to be from Fury of the Deep, when Quill and Oak release gas from their mouths, the music just adds to the creep factor. I think there is a clip of this scene from the missing story on the BBC site.

I agree Brian- you have to see a lot more of Troughton to truly appreciate him. I'm a big fan of "Tomb of the Cybermen" myself- it was a great story. I especially enjoyed the interplay between Jamie, the Doctor and Zoe- I really wish we could have hung out with them more.
Speaking of "discovering" Doctors, I've really developed a respect for the Third Doctor. He was the last Doctor I'd seen, besides in "The Five Doctors". He may not be my favorite doctor, but more than a few of his stories are among my favorites (I can't wait for The Inferno to hit DVD!)

It's almost February and the wife and I are making great progress in starting Doctor Who over from the very beginning. 
I am sooooo looking forward to getting into Patrick Troughton's era. I've seen so many bios and fan documentaries about the actor without ever managing to watch a single one of his episodes! He seemed like a truely nice person. 
My birthday is coming in a few weeks and I am hoping someone manages to float me a copy of the Mindrobbers dvd. My only dread is that there seems to be more fan reconstructions of his eps than the Hartnell era. |

The Troughton era is a mixed bag as far as stories/scripts are concerned. There seem to be quite a few "base under seige" type stories. There are a few classics as well as a few duds. Having quite a bit of episodes missing from the archives, it is ironic that the longest surviving story is the Troughton era's final 10 episode epic The Wargames. The Cybermen are developed pretty well in this era, but sometimes their schemes are silly, if not stupid, It is unfortunate that the two Dalek stories are amongst the missing. At least the audio soundtracks are available for all the episodes... And an official BBC reconstruction exists for Power of the Daleks.

| For me Patrick troughton is the best Doctor after Peter Davision. Its so sad that a lot of his TV stuff is missing. But at least we are lucky to have a lot of his stuff on CD. |

Oh Troughton is right up there for me. I taped his existing stories off my Public TV station back in the mid-80's. Unfortunately some of those tapes are a bit ragged after being stored for a time in an attic. But I've made a point to purchase all of his available DVD's.
I think The War Games, despite it's length, is one of the most important stories of the entire classic series run. That's when we first found out the Doctor was a Time Lord. Certainly it is overly long but those final two episodes are some of my favorites from the entire run of the series when he first goes before the Time Lords and they put him on trial.
I met him at a small convention back in 1985. I have his autograph. I was a radio reporter in those days so I was able to place my microphone up to him and record the entire thing in perfect clarity. I still have the tape. |

| I would but it runs about 45 minutes or more. Plus I'll have to convert it from cassette tape to MP3, which I can do...it's just something that might take a little time. Maybe I'll post some excerpts for starters. |

My First Troughton was "Tomb of the Cybermen". I thought it was fantastic. I had laughed at the early Cybermen costumes when I saw pictures before watching the episode. However, I really like them once I saw them on screen. They were terrifying.
I think Troughton illustrates one of the best reasons why you can never truly pin down who is "best doctor". So much of what he does is unique and special. Everyone will have their favorites, but each is to be enjoyed on his own merits. It is an absolute tragedy that his run is cut down so severely by the lost episodes. |
