Intresting, I wonder why the PG rating. I guess violence is the reason, but I thought standards had dropped (just judging from television in general) not raised. I can't wait either. -=sigh=-
So, tell us about the animation. That's what we are longing to hear about. |

I'm quoting myself so the original picture should be here - because the Invasion Box is now on sale in the UK - but they they have changed the box.
Here is a low quality group taken on my phone:-

They have dropped the cartoon Doctor face on the front - you can see they haven't moved the large 'Doctor Who' text to a central position they have just left a gap - unless there should be a 'sticker' here - and on the back the only indication that some of the story is reconstructed is the smail cartoon picture. You can't see from this image but nothing in the text mentions the reconstructed parts.
I think this is a mistake and may well upset the casual Dr Who buyer.
EDIT:- unless this is just the 'Display Box' and when you buy you get the 'proper box' - but even that is a bit misleading.

I think it may well be a display box. I got my copy today and it has the cartoon Doctor featured in a circular sticker on the front. Have only seen (the animated) episode one so far. Not bad. One of the scenes with villains early on comes across as really sinister for a cartoon. Not sure where the story is going at the moment but it looks good.
[Spoiler for those who don't want to know about the FEATURES on the DVD (but I don't ruin anything about the plot)]:
The only downside is that the animators mention (in one of the interviews) that the two missing (animated) episodes don't actually feature the cybermen very much. They thought this was a shame cos they were really looking forward to animating them.
Also, the sequences on the BBC website earlier this year are part of a special early test animation that Cosgrove made did to prove they could do it. Consequently the footage featured doesn't feature in either of the animated episodes. The animator wanted to animate cybermen so he went for some of the (existing) iconic footage.
Definitely worth a look.

Thank for the other info.
My point still stands that anyone who is not a Podshock listener - 'Benton take that man's name and number' - won't know what they are buying.
It could be of course that in the next few days the 'old' or pre-release boxes are moved.
But I'm I right in saying that on the back of the box there is no mention of reconstructed episodes?

I've experienced this story twice. The first time was on VHS with the linking narration for parts 1 & 4 (was it with Nick Courtney? I forget). The second time was the BBC Audio soundtrack CD. This is most likely the best Cyberman story.
Do the other UK releases list out the special features on the back? I expect the sticker will be on the shrink wrap, and an open copy will obviously not have the plastic with the sticker.

| My Invasion cover, from Amazon.UK, is the one with the Special Edition DVD sticker on it with the animated face of Patrick Troughton. |

Got my DVD on Saturday - and has the sticker on the cover as shown in your original picture. You are right though, apart from the single animated picture on the back - and reference in the extras to the animated episodes (in a miniscule font), without the sticker it would be slightly difficult to spot there are two reconstructed episodes.
But....they are fantastic. I have to say how surprised I am by how well they come out - they convey the atmosphere, very good representations of the actors. Within a few minutes you lose the novelty value and 'almost' forget you are watching animation. In terms of presenting episodes that don't exist any more - a resounding success. |

I got this today and have had a look at the animation and I think it works pretty well. It's not the best animation in the world but I think it is quite effective considering they must have been on a pretty strict budget. I'm definitely satisfied.

I agree, Dave. That's a mistake. They should be proud of their reconstruction efforts, not try to hide it with a couple of simple pics on the back.
People not knowing what to expect may get upset about it, and anyone else will wonder why they're trying to hide the fact.
Sean.

I was looking at the US Amazon.com site and "The Invasion" is available for pre-order with a release date of March 7, 2007.
But the reviews and write-ups they have on it are the ones referring to the version with the Nicholas Courtney narration rather than the animated version.
I am assuming this is an Amazon.com error and that the US will also be getting the new animated version rather than the one with the narration. If not I would be very disappointed. |
