I'm watching "Brain of Morbeus", and Sarah has just been knocked down a flight of stairs. She comes to on a table as the Doctor returns for her.
She relates a dream she had (which of course wasn't a dream but what just happened to her) and then when she realises she's back in reality, she asks about the creature who just attacked her. It's the creature made up of parts of various aliens lured to crash on the planet.
She says: "What happened to Mister All-Sorts?"
Now normally, this wouldn't catch my ear, except that my biggest beef about Doctor Who (the episode that made me really almost give up on it) was the Kandyman episode, which was a robotic monster made of huge licorice All-Sorts candy.
Hmmmmm.... coincidence? Or desperate McCoy writers looking back for inspiration?

Another interesting aspect of that episode was when Morbeus and the Doctor wrestle each other mentally.
On a holographic projector, the Doctor's incarnations rewound: Baker, Pertwee, Troughton, Hartnell...
And then we see a series of other male faces...
So the question is: Was Hartnell the Doctor's first form? If so, why these other faces?
I guess it could be Morbeus's regenerations, but there was no indication it was anything but our Doctor's regenerations.

The production team was trying to give some of the behind the scenes people some recognition on screen. It is widely accepted that Hartnell is the original, and I think that is stated in either The Three Doctors, or The Five Doctors with the first Doctor claming to be the original. But it does seem that in the mind duel with Morbius, that it is suggested that those are the Doctor's prior selves. I just like the way the "fish bowl" brain case fills up with smoke in that episode.
So, are you watching the abridged version, or the full version. I remember feeling quite short-changed when the abridged version was released.

Yes, it was not the pinnacle moment in our beloved long running series.
I think many of us almost gave up on it at that point... and many of us did.

Yeah, devoted as I was, I saw the series jump the shark at that point, and while I watched the remaining episodes, it was with a very different point of view.

I'm sure the Candyman reference was purely conicidental. Although we all know how much of a stickler for continuity J-N-T was. So who knows?
But I harken back to Romana's regneration scene where she tried on a couple of bodies before picking Lalla Ward's. If we're to believe the history of the series, it seems to me that the regeneration is a trying time for a Time Lord. With that in mind I don't know how she was able to survive it. But maybe Time Lords have the ability to regenerate or change their likeness on cue even if it didn't happen following a serious injury or death. Romana did it, just for the heck of it. Maybe the original Doctor regenerated just for the heck of it a few times before.
And Time Lords seem to have the ability to cause the regenerations of their counterparts. Look at the end of "The War Games" when The High Council forces Troughton's regeneration. And then there's the end of "Planet of the Spiders," where K'anpo sent some kind of karma to Pertwee to help along his regneration. |
