What with the upcoming release of k-9, I wondered what the forum felt (despite whether you loved or hated him)was the best use of the metal dog in an episode/story of Doctor Who.
Answers on a postcard anybody? |

Actually, I kinda think it's "School Reunion", really. I always thought, even then, that he looked kinda naff, so it's good to have companions openly laughing at him. Plus he delivered genuine emotional content for once, both through his own innate "logical bravery", and by the attachment he generated in the Doctor and Sarah. He's never been written more as a character than in "Reunion".
But if you're talking original series, I quite liked him in "Stones of Blood". But then I love everything about "Stones of Blood". On the whole, he works much better with Romana I than any other companion — even if, on paper, he should be a nice study in contrasts with Leela. I hate his interaction with Lalla Ward. |

he is v good in city of death and Destiny of the Daleks...
seriously though. I like him in the Key to time season. esp scones of blood.
Pirate planet when he takes on the parrot was a memory from childhood that just wouldnt shift.
and I actually like K9 and company.
however he works REALLY well on Audio. (The colin baker effect?)
the adventures in a pocket universe are good but where Mk1 and Mk2 are on galifrey together in Gallifrey...
they really hit the spot and are used well. |

| I personally do not care all too much for K-9. I feel that during the Graham Williams era there was a great deal of silliness, somewhat of a disregard for continuity, and a real effort to take the character of the Doctor and turn him into an unstoppable super hero, in which he was given far too many resources. Between the sonic screwdriver, another time lord traveling with him, and K-9, The Doctor had more deus ex machinas than he could possibly know what to do with. As a result, for me, it made K-9's time on the show a rather anti-climatic and fairly predictable one. Though there were a few exceptions which obviously includes City of Death, I feel that K-9 did little to further the show and, for me, made it less enjoyable as a whole. |

I have always loved K9, probably because I was 10 when he first appeared in Doctor Who, so I was the target age group. Loved "school reunion" in equal parts over the inclusion of SJS and K9. Don't know that I would want him to return permantly to either Doctor Who or SJS adventures, but an occasional appearance is most welcome. He needs an update like the Daleks which lets him "jet" around.
When I met Sophie Aldred at Who in the Cavern last year, I told her that she was my second favourite companion. She replied that was okay as long as K9 was the more favored one, which he was.
Met John Leason, a couple of years ago in Boston and must confess I didn't really take to him very much. I see why he was the first to be voted of "the weakest Link" |

The new box set is a great place. Invisible enemy (with new SFX!) and K9 and Co in one box. the extras are great too.
