And 3+ months later, it's done.
A few thoughts on the results:
- Pleasantly surprised to see Robots of Death finish so high. It's always been a favorite of mine, but I wasn't aware of its broader appeal to everyone else.
- Surprised Genesis didn't finish top 3. I thought that was going to be a given.
- Also surprised to see Invasion of Time and Revenge of the Cybermen finish so low. True, they're not the greatest stories, but I thought they were better than a bunch that finished ahead of them.
- I think the trend is clear: Early stories good. Later stories bad. Zero post-Leela stories in the top 10, and only 1 post Key To Time story in the top 20. On the other end, 11 of the bottom 14 are post-Leela. |

Phew!
A lot to say here, though that's not surprising, because the sheer number of serials and the distinctly different producer/script editor pairings (all with their own fans) within the era was always going to result in a list I couldn't possibly agree with throughout.
Just like a lot of people this is my favourite era, and even the worst serials are made watchable by Baker's unique, magnetic screen presence IMO.
The top two are the same two I would pick (My favourite has ranked top in all but the McCoy era so far, but that just shows my unoriginal taste  .)
I would have Seeds of Doom and City of Death (my biggest surprise was that finishing outside the top 10) in the top 5 with Deadly Assassin. I'd rank Ark in Space a little higher, drop Horror of Fang Rock a few places lower and and Robot by several. I largely agree with what made the top 15 or so, just not the order.
I think Masque of Mandragora is very low (at least a dozen places too low) and Meglos surprisingly high. I rate Warriors' Gate far higher than most here by the look of this list. Androids of Tara is also about ten places lower than I would rank it.
sgb1975I, I agree about Invasion of Time. I expected it's position though. It's a bit of a mess, just about holding together until falling apart in the final episodes, but Tom is on top form and there are some very entertaining exchanges throughout. I much prefer watching it to things like The Power of Kroll and all of season 18, barring Warriors Gate and State of Deacy.
I'd even rate 'Nimon and Nightmare of Eden higher than a few of the season 18 serials.
Logopolis, The Armageddon Factor, and The Leisure Hive would round out the bottom of my own list. For me they all suffer from unforgivably long stretches of extreme dullness. |

WHAT A RIDE!!!
Little did I know when I started this in January (22), that it would take this long.
There are a few surprises but as a whole not really that different than I expected. As a whole the JNT season suffered pretty badly - the highest ranked story from his year is "Meglos" and that came in at 21.
But, there is no surprise about the Phillip Hinchcliffe (seasons 12 - 14 (except "Robot")) stories doing so well. Many consider him to be one of the best producers of the show.
Next came Graham Williams (seasons 15 -17) - Still good, but as time went on the stories from that time began to suffer greatly.
And the in 18th (and final season for Tom Baker) came John Nathan-Turner (with Barry Letts as Executive Producer), on a mission to revive a dying show - and they did, but there were mixed reviews, and our list here shows the same (most of his stories rank in the middle of the list).
Again, no big surprises but - What a ride! |

| Yes, I think this is a fair result overall. Obviously, as you can tell from my picture I would have liked to have seen the Ark in Space higher up, but that's purely personal taste and once that had been voted out I could relax and be a little more logical about the rest. Really I wouldn't argue with many of the top ten. Would have liked to have seen the Sontaran experiment a little higher, just because the location filming always makes it feel so different to other stories and I love seeing the Doctor sans TARDIS. Also felt that some of the last season, which to me felt like a real renaissance of the series, should have ranked a little higher (Keeper of Traken in particular). Overall, the hardest game for me to play so far as this was really my era and I love so many of these stories with a passion that it was hard to rank one above the other. As a No. 1 story, I feel that Talons represents this epoch quite well - its Gothic feel, the alien companion (so many of the 4th Doctor's companions were not human), the scary (to a child anyway) cliffhangers, the iconic image of Tom baker in a Holmesian deerstalker. A good story to recommend to newcomers, I'd say. |

Love the top 15 shows and found it hard to vote so vehemently vs. Genesis there towards the end, but I've always had a great fondness for Sutek, Taran Kapel and good old Magnus Greel over Davros.
At the bottom, I agree w/ Idiom that Keeper of Traken was a surprise to be so low, and I had re-watched Underworld back in February and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Give it a shot on I-tunes. The quest is the quest. |

A few surprises at the top for me. I thought Genesis would have ranked in the top 2, and expected City of Death somewhere close to the top 5.
But the bigger shocks for me were in the cellar-dwellers. I'd always thought Logopolis, a childhood favourite of mine, was well regarded by fans and was really shocked to see it go so early. (Same for Castrovalva in the Davison round, for that matter - clearly no Bidmead love in these threads!)
Also very surprised to see The Sontaran Experiment so low. That was another one which I'd always had the impression was fondly regarded by fans, though it's not particularly one on my favourites...
