Wow. What a difference good episodes make in actually wanting to watch more DW! This starts out running and never stops. The plot happens right away, involved all the major players, switches to the Anartic seamlessly and keeps on moving. The one flaw I see is that the Doctor's intervention takes so long that his knowledge helps NO ONE and if he had warned the...well, then ther'e would be no story but he also takes the second pod out of the snow, making it deadly too. He says he's not a medical doctor but he really is somewhat...witness THE ARK and THE MOONBASE. Why he wants them to help themselves without giving a hand like he always does makes him seem uncaring. He's also wrong: Winlett didn't have a chance did he? Or did he? Who knows? But either his timing or the ep's timing is all off. Either way this is chilling and the cliffhangers are scary. Sarah is in top form again and the villains are all well developed. Chase is just like a Bond villain isn't he? With henchmen and double crossers to boot. Okay it also seems alot like THE THING and DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS but at least this time it is a good version. There's also something comforting about having Frankenstein one week, this another, and say, Dracula or Phantom another or rather all under one banner of Doctor Who, especialy when the story is good and exciting as this is. I trulyu, on first viewing didn't know who wouldlive and who would die...and in traditional TOm DW, almost all die in the first two eps...and more to come. Scorby and Keeler are sufficiently mean spirted and menacing; the poor scientists, to all die like that. The monster is really just the Axon suit repainted and with bits and pieces added...but here it looks even scarier. The second cliffhanger is really the one that sends chills down the spine...explosions I guess have a special chill for me now..but whatever. This is not really totally trad DW but it is more like Avengers but more on that with the last four eps. The sets are good and one really seems to feel they are in the cold Anartic even with the fake snow. It's the acting. It's really good. The Doctor: I don't know why but he seems in a mood with almost everyone, a bad mood. I don't know but he waited too long to get there, too long to tell them how dangerous it all was, and too long to reveal the Krynoid and too long...well, you get the idea. Anyway this one is rather good and several Tom antics are quite fun: the turn around bit and the singing bit.
