    SEEDS OF DOOM 3-4

Once more this moves on fast. Some fans are uncomfortable with the Doctor carrying a gun, punching, jumping threw a glass roof, knocking people down, twisting someone’s neck, etc. I wasn’t then and I am not now. I admit I always liked the Doctor being a pacifist but was he ever really? The tone moves away from THE THING and more into DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS but actually it is more like the first Emma Peel season of THE AVENGERS and in particular…the giant plant taking over the world episode THE MANEATER OF SURREY GREEN. When I first saw this, Doctor Who for me was still a thing of mystery…this alien Doctor was different than most heroes, however this story made him more like the others and for this one story that was okay. Sarah, too, floated dangerously toward becoming Mrs Emma Peel or at least Tara King, for this story. Her telling off of Scorby for instance wouldn’t have happened in PLANET OF EVIL or BRAIN OF MORBIUS. Chase is gone into in detail. His villainy and madness is expounded upon as is Scorby, the brilliant location work is just marvelous and the house/mansion/estate looks lovely. Amelia Ducat is just a wild wonderful eccentric who really aides the good guys and she has a similar appearance in THE TOMORROW PEOPLE: A RIFT IN TIME and before this story aired or was made I believe.

The chasing around the house, mansion, grounds, and woods is fun and I don’t think it feels like filler at all. It makes the story tense and for Pete’s Sake, Sarah Jane gets YET ANOTHER GREAT cliffhanger! And another cliffhanger at the end of episode four makes one feel chilled. I know some feel the Krynoid carpet creature was just laughable for some reason, for me, this cliffhanger is really really good. The sound effects, the music, the darkness of the sequence, Sarah screaming, Dunbar having just been killed, the Doctor holding a sword and looking useless with it, the thing coming at the camera while it zooms in on it and the sting of the cliffhanger just make it one of the best. The show in the mid 1980s could have learned from the cliffhangers in the Tom Baker era of the show. The acting from all also helps.

The actors here are all very good and the man playing Keeler is quite good at moving between ally, transforming victim, and suspicious monster.

The two episodes here shift comfortably between action adventure and horror as Keeler turns into a Krynoid, Scorby hunts the Doctor and Sarah….and then it gets more into James Bond type villainy with Chase…

One thing: why didn’t the Doctor and Sarah involve UNIT in the case earlier and also why didn’t they have a full scale raid on the estate? I guess because that might shorten the story by two episodes!?

All in all a good pair of eps with action, intrigue, monsters, and horror and some good fun jibs at Scorby from the Doctor.
