    SEEDS OF DOOM 5-6

Well played. Well acted. It’s strange noticing how Scorby becomes an ally while in the first eps he was trying to kill Sarah and the Doctor and was responsible for at least one of the scientist’s deaths. Anyhow, John Challis, who plays him, does a wonderful job. I really like the dilemma here and it does seem as if the Doc’s left Sarah to die. I mean would you leave her alone with Scorby with Chase running around, mad as a hatter? The Doctor’s intrusion on Thackery’s office is well played and Tom’s comic antics have not reached the cult status of say, season 16 or 17, unfortunately (I’m one who just loves his sense of humor) but he gets one or two asides in here that are quite funny. More grim horror and death await several characters and if anyone’s not sure it is Doctor Who’s style…I rest assured, it is. Death has always been part of DW and always will be, even as far back as REIGN OF TERROR where we hear if not see a man shot in the face…

Again, I feel the effects are adequate and not laughable, even for this time but one does have to take that into consideration. I think the ideas are creepy…the plant world revolting against human kind…of course this happened in other movies and nature attacking mankind was a theme around in the early 70s and even late 60s. It’s always disturbing (NO BLADE OF GRASS, FROGS) and the news report of people dying while gardening leaves one with a sad feeling.

So everyone at the house/estate dies except of course for Sarah and the Doctor and one well placed bomb does it all. Nice model work though and I mean that. The last scene is not really funny and a bit off. Glad that Amelia Ducat and Thackery make the story out alive though.

That said, uhm, the Doctor fires some steam out the door and that allows he and Sarah to make it out to…where? A log? Was that steam jet enough to get them a clear enough exit that far from the bomb? Guess so.

Anyway, while I see the greatness in this season, I don’t think it’s any more or less satisfying than ALL previous DW seasons, to be honest. There are some great moments, great plots and stories and a menacing feel that ALMOST no one is safe…except of course for the Doctor and Sarah.

One thing about these episodes, WHY THE BLOODY HELL is Tom Baker murmuring though them. He usually shouts and is loud but several lines in this I just could not hear. Was he protesting the script? Which is a rumor I read. But really!!! TOm Speak up! I thought for a moment I was watching the murmuerer Sly McCoy!
