Just got this one today and am going through the commentaries. Peter Miles (Nyder) voice still gives me the creeps when I hear his commentaries. Also love the bit at the beginning of episode two where Tom Baker tells Elisabeth Sladen not to get too fresh with Peter.

Haha, ya he still sounds exactly the same, I just listened to this today myself, I liked the commentaries quite a bit. I thought it was funny how Tom seemed to ooh and aah alot whenever he had a good line on the screen. I got kick out of how he just couldn't stop talking about Harriet Philpin(Bettan, leader of the Thals in the last couple of eps) and how he seemed to get mad she wasn't in the first couple earlier episodes.

My copy finally arrived in the mail!

I've purchased most of the old series releases that are available as UK DVDs, and I have to say that the "production values" of this one are the best. There seems to a marked increase in design quality since 2Entertain began releasing the new DVDs. The cover design just looks better… some of the other releases have seen a little bland. And like "City of Death", Genesis also has color printed an image on the top side of the DVDs themselves. Top notch, really top notch! And there is a sticker on the DVD box that reads "No. 1 Doctor Who story EVER as voted by Doctor Who magazine readers"; somehow, that sent chills up my spine.

Speaking of the Timelords' mission for the Doctor that makes up the premise for this story, it seems as if the Doctor actually may have *failed*… the Timelords' saw a time when the Daleks would become the supreme rulers of the universe. The BBC website says that by warning Davros of the dangers of the Daleks, the Doctor changed their timeline… Davros put some sort of forcefield around himself before he was killed, allowing him to be revived by the Daleks later and sowing dissent that otherwise would have never come about (and explaining how he comes to be featured in all subsequent Dalek stories the BBC would make for the old series).

But I'm not sure that the Timelords' fears have been properly abated, especially if you look at this story from the point of view of the "new" Doctor Who. The Daleks apparently become so powerful that they threaten the Timelords' very existence in the last great time war (whose story I would *really* like to see some day…). And apparently, this war can only be brought to an end by the Doctor destroying by the Daleks and Gallifrey with them at the same time. We also know from "Dalek" (and through other means that I won't spoil Laughing Out Loud ) that some Daleks survive this explosion, to the Doctor's chagrin (because, apparently, no other Timelord's survival has yet been verified).

So, despite intervention during Genesis, the Daleks still become so powerful that they indirectly destroy the Timelords, making them, or maybe the Doctor, the winner of the last great time war.

I wonder if the Doctor, in retrospect, would regret not having accomplished more on Skaro Question Neutral

I guess I'm glad that's the next one out (that and Revelation of the Daleks). I'm just not a huig Daleks fans. I'd rather see more Cybermen stories.

I think we'll see an Invasion DVD released on R2 (then R1) sometime in the next 12 months. Especially after the Cyber two-parter that has just aired in the UK.

After that Revenge is a possible candidate for the DVD treatment sometime soon but beyond I don't think we're likely to see any other old series Cyber DVDs for awhile. It hasn't been long enough since Tenth Planet and Attack came out on VHS and I have some doubts about the demand for a Silver Nemesis DVD.

I was actually a bit underwhelmed by the commentary, as Tom was a bit off (or was it asleep?) through much of it. I think Tom's best to date is probably "Ark in Space". But then, maybe it's cause I actually prefer "Ark" as a story. Not to say it was a bad commentary in any way; it was actually quite fun. But it was a little less enthusiastic than I was hoping.

I absolutely love the extras on the second disc. The documentary on the making of the story was excellent, and Baker had me laughing out loud. I also really enjoyed the stories about how Michael Wisher prepared for his role. This and City of Death are the first DVDs in a long time for Doctor Who where I feel the special features are worthy and not a waste of time.

It's been sitting in its shrink wrap with so many other unopened DVDs for about a month now. So last night I finally unwrapped it and started watching it. After all, there is no new DW from the BBC tonight Cry . It's been a while since I last seen it. I haven't gotten to the extras yet. I was pleasantly surprised that they tacked on an advert at the beginning of the disc. I usually hate when they do that, but in this case, it is acceptable Wink .

    Cheers,
    Louis

You must be referring to the dogs... Twisted Evil Blue Peter presenter Peter Purves starred as Steven Tyler during the Hartnell era. I can't say if he watched the program, though.

There aren't many older Cybermen stories left to release once we get Invasion. The orphaned eps from the Troughton era are out in the Lost Years, Tomb is out, we're getting Invasion. From that era, only one left is 10th Planet.

I expected Revenge to come out this year to tie in with series two...

Thankfully it didn't as it's kind of crap...

But it is the first appearance of the "Seal of Rassilon" as I guess the Timelords were behind the Vogans after all (in my revisionist view at least). And where else to we get to see round bombs? And that fabled planet of gold? To bad the story falls apart upon viewing, but, then again, when have the Cybermen ever had a "logical" plan? Well, at least they saved on sets by reusing the space station set from The Ark In Space. Too bad the Cybermen sat out the Pertwee era. It would have been great to see him face off against them.

Now that we've strayed slightly off topic... It was great to see Genesis again after all those years. This is the story that I really remember most clearly from my first encounters with Doctor Who back in the late seventies on WOR. That first Tom Baker season was a gradual build up leading to this Dalek story. Though half of the season featured returning monsters, they were new to me at the time, and I'm still hooked on Doctor Who after all these years.
