Okay, weird question. Does anyone else watch Campion and think that you're seeing Davison play the Doctor as he'd probably wished to?

"I think of myself as ambitious in casting terms, and I know that Bonnie [Langford] has the potential to make the part totally unirritating . . ." JNT, 1986

    Simply; yes.

Also, I personally don't think he got Campion quite right. There was a mellowing towards the end, but although greatly watchable, in the earlier series he was a little too sarky. In a similar way, everyone largely just assumed that Stephen Fry nailed Jeeves - I don't think he did.

Although I can't say I read it much now, a few years ago I was heavily into crime fiction. My main focus was modern US noirists like Ellroy, Block & Bunker, and traditional smoking-jacket English like (obviously) Doyle and Durbridge (although trying to get Durbridge books is harder than you might think, assuming you've ever wondered). Although I didnt read loads of Allingham, I read a few. & to my memory, Campion was much nicer, and on the face of it, much softer (albeit with a hard centre where necessary) than Davison seemed to play him. As much as I can see it's how he would've liked to have played the Doctor, more simply than that I think he kind of just played himself (as he was at the time).

i just finished listening to the davison era podshock.
the key to understanding davison as the doctor is to realize what he couldn't do. following tom baker, he couldn't be very quirky, funny and was restricted. in addition, his companions were all quite weak, compared to tom bakers. [for good's sake, tegan was dreadful not to mention adric!] If you want to see davison's dr. as it should have been, watch the first episode of campion, 'look to the lady'. it's quirky, funny and irrisistable. In addition, Brian Glover and he have a chemistry Tegan could only dream of. Unfortunately, the other campions became rather ordinary. But that's partly due to the fact that the rest of the campion novels didn't have that quirky element. You get a taste of that in davison's last episode, as if he said to JNT, 'sod off' i'm going to have fun with this.
All in all, some of the stories were weak and didn't have the benefit of davison's natural charm to sustain it. In the tom baker era, the fun was watching him, not just the stories. davison has the power to do that, but i always felt he was held back by JNT.
obviously listening to this episode, i'm in the minority but, i didn't like pertwee either.
