As I'm no big fan of Davison (dotn get me wrong, I love what i've seen of him, but it sadly hasnt been that much), I was hoping for some help on his back ground.
What's with the cricket whites? Is he a fan of cricket, and if so, why wear a jersey when you're out and about?
And what's with the limp celery? |

You never know when you'll land on a cricket pitch, and/or get the chance to bowl...
The celery is there to detect certain gasses. Explained in The Caves of Androzani.
The main idea behind the 5th Doctor was to make him about as different from the 4th Doctor as possible. The 4th Doctor did have a knowledge of cricket which he puts to good use in The Horns of Nimon.

| I liked Davison's portrayal in general. I re-watch his stories frequently....even "Time Flight," which I happen to like a lot although it seems many fans think it's one of the worst. |

I was thinking that maybe the celery was something he could snack on if supplies ran low? or he found himself in a sticky situation.
Maybe he could pin some other vegetables to himself and make a little salad! |

| The cricket theme isn't really explained by anything other than the fact that he happens into the TARDIS cricket pitch when his personality finally calms down enough for him to notice that he's torn up a good deal of the Fourth Doctor's clothes. He's only shown to actually play cricket once, during "Black Orchid", and otherwise never expresses any particular fondness for the sport.
It's pretty pointless, really. Had he ended up somewhere else in the TARDIS, one can imagine he'd have taken whatever clothes were handy. It's kinda the same answer to the question of why Pertwee wore frilly shirts and capes. Cause they were in the bath when he got out and needed something to wear. |

In Four to Doomsday the Fifth Doctor throws (or is it bowls?) a cricket ball in space... The Fourth Doctor was shown to have a cricket ball in his pocket in The Ark in Space and The Hand of Fear. |

| I've been looking at the BBC shop and on Amazon and I could only find 2 dvd's of his adventures. Anybody know why they've released so few of Peter Davison? |

There should be five DVDs of Peter Davison's era available in the US right now.
They include:
The Visitation
Earthshock
The Five Doctors
Resurrection of the Daleks
The Caves of Androzani
Hopefully more on the way... sloooooowly but surely.
Cheers,

| it should be noted for stjohnny that The Caves of Androzani, in which we learn the truth of the celery, is actually his LAST story. So while it was an explanation, viewers had to wait until Davison was practically out the door before someone wrote a reason for it. Bottom line, I think that whoever made the calls on the costumes for each respective doctor just wanted something very eccentric and unusual. I don't think anyone ever though of an explanation for ANY of it. I just feel lucky someone even wrote an explanation for the celery. |

(possible spoiler)
Yeah, the celery added a bit of mystery back to the character. We didn't know what it was all about and I believe we were told at the time that we would eventually learn why he was wearing it... and as hdutch007 pointed out, we eventually did find out in his final story.
Some had speculated that the same thing was happening concerning the 3-D glasses that the 10th Doctor was using in Army of Ghosts, not knowing that we would find out the reason for it in the following episode, Doomsday...

Well, if I'm right... celery is one of the only foods that burns more calories to eat than it actually contains. Maybe the celery is a metaphorical expression of the dichotomy in the very existance of the TARDIS and indeed, the omnitransience of Time Lord physicality!!!
Woah I just blew my own mind there...
Wikipedia entry about celery:
"A chthonian symbol, celery was said to have sprouted from the blood of Kadmilos, father of the Cabers, chthonian divinities celebrated in Samothrace, Lemnos and Thebes. The spicy odour and dark leaf colour encouraged this association with the cult of death. In classical Greece celery leaves were used as garlands for the dead..."
... the Doctor's one constant companion. DEATH! muahahaha

That was excellent. Made me not only smile, but I actually laughed out loud. Just a tiny bit, mind you, and anyone nearby might have mistaken it for a cough, but still...

I thought that was pizza! It would explain why I'm the size of a house, rather than a stick figure. By the way, is there more than one version of the Five Doctors on DVD? The one I have has no extras, so was wondering if there was another out there. |

The Region 1 version of "The Five Doctors" has an absolutely fabulous commentary track with Peter Davison and Terrance Dicks but the Region 2 & 4 versions do not.
