I was surprised but quite happy to see Earthshock so low as I think it tends to be vastly overrated. Of course the same can be said about The Caves of Androzani.

I think the first episode of Earthshock is great with, as Idiom mentioned, a brilliant cliffhanger. It's one of the comparatively rare times in Doctor Who where a regular villain isn't mentioned in the title so there's real suspense as to what's happening and who's behind it. Also as Mr. Magister rightly says, it was a huge moment for fans at the time but I can never really view it through those eyes as I didn't see it then.
After that though, I find the following episodes completely forgettable and I loathe the "jolly" 80s Cybermen. The last good Cyberman story for me is The Invasion.

Because pretty few people regularly take part in the hurt/heals here it is much easier to make your own prejudices felt and once the serials I really disliked were out of the way I must admit I was gunning for Earthshock as early as possible as I thought it might get a lot of support.

Oh, almost forgot Adric. While this part of Earthshock was no doubt a emotional moment for many fans (OK that emotion was joy for some, but still strong feelings) I think the cheesy and unsubtle way it was handled at the end rather spoiled it and actually took away from the effectiveness of the ending.
I think it would have been far more effective to just continue with the usual closing credits and music leaving the audience reeling rather than the hamfisted "here is your moment of reflection, please feel sad now, isn't this an amazing TV moment we've created?" effect the makers went for instead.

While The Visitation is definitely no classic and I wouldn't rate it 4th in the Davison era, I prefer it to Earthshock as a whole serial.

Yes, the Cybermen were best and most ominous during the Troughton era - no comparison...even to today's standard of the 'Pete's World' type.

Yes, I still have the rubbish beard!
