do you think colin baker had the worst doctor who outfit?
now i'm not saying that he was a bad actor or anything i'm just saying his outfit was too much.
i mean i can see they went with trying to Appeal to kids with his look.
but i think his outfit was just too goofy
ya know what i'm saying? |

Kind of like asking "Do you think the Earth is spherical?" or "Is Jessica Alba hot?"
Heh.
It was an embarrassment to watch, and probably even moreso to wear.
But since we're on the topic, which Doctor's outfit do you (all) think was the best? (Please be specific too, because they didn't always wear the same outfit throughout their runs.)
Me, Tom Baker in the russet-colored coat with similarly colored scarf edges out his earlier gray greatcoat and standard scarf.
I also liked Eccleston's toned-down simple look.
Hated Pertwee's outfit, and was awfully irritated by Troughton's pants.

I absolutely hated the "?" theme of the 6th and 7th Doctors.
I thought that Tom Baker's outfit with the riding boots (I think it was his original one) was probably the best outfit, with Eccleston's leather jacket close behind. |

Well, Tennant and Eccleston are the best-dressed Doctors. However, I really like why McGann is dressed as he is. It's the best "choose-your-clothes" moment in the history of the programme.
Tom's obviously the champion of the classic series, for me. It's really lovely how his costume changed subtly over time. I even don't mind the last season. Although it's clearly my least favorite look for him, there's something appropriately autumnal about it. I just wish that when he died in "Logopolis", he coudl've used his scarf one last time to hold on to the radio tower, and as the scarf had begun to give, he could've said, "Oh, Romana, you were right. I should've never changed scarves."
Had not Davison added that particular coat, I think I woudl've bought the whole cricket uniform thing, though I would've preferred that the uniform be grounded in some reality—if "Black Orchid", for example, had been the opening story of his run. When Davison has the coat off, he's a serious contender for best-dressed Doctor.
Troughton's clothes change is probably the weakest. For all we know from surviving clips, his clothes regenerate with him. Which is rather silly. Still, they are a rather perfect fit for his personality, just as Hartnell's are for his.
Pertwee I don't get at all. The change happens organically to the plot of "Spearhead", to be sure, but I guess I find it hard to believe that professional men actually walked around like that in the middle of the day. The fact that he seemingly had a new variation every story of his later years just really bugs me. The whole getup is so incongruous with his personality. RTD once said it was appropriate to his age because ti was the time of Jimi Hendrix, who dressed similarly. But the thing is, Pertwee's miles away from Hendrix. It's just . . . odd that he relished and morphed the look as much as he obviously did. I actually find his Doctor the worst-dressed of the lot in terms of the clothes matching the character. To my mind, he should've been Saville Road all the way. And I mean that literally. We should've seen him at some posh tailor's with frequency. It just makes me laugh to think of the Doctor refusing to stop being measured up for a suit, while the Brig is trying to find a way to give him a briefing on some top secret matter in front of fussy haberdashers.
Colin you can at least say makes some sense because his mind was rather fractured when he chose it, just like the coat itself—and he was deliberately chosing something that wasn't aesthetically appealing by human conventions. I'm not saying I like it, just that it's at least not ignored as silly and garish by other characters. It's story driven,.
And McCoy I care least about, so it really doesn't matter that much to me. I will say he looked rather splendid in the TVM, and that I preferred dark coat to light. He's perhaps best-dressed in "Fenric"; that student-y overcoat really suits him. But that damned umbrella really, really bugs me. Seriously, there are times ("Remembrance" being an obvious one) where I get flashes of Burgess Meredith as "The Penguin". |

You're absoultely right about Davison's outfit. "Black Orchid" should have been where he picked it up, and stuck with it. It would have explained everything, rather than it just being appropriate when he happened to show up on a cricket field.
It would have been great if he had kept Baker's coat for a while, perhaps chucking the scarf and hat, or going back to his grey greatcoat, then in Black Orchid, switching to Cricket whites.

The reason McGann doesn't get my vote is it's too similar to Pertwee. Sure, it's not quite as gussied-up, but consider Pertwee's later years, with the green velvet coat... it's awfully similar.
Which shouldn't really remove it from competition, but for some reason for me it does.
