DIgital spy has an interesting story that details some of the stories that would have been the 23rd season if the show had not been put on hiatus.
Mentioned in the article we have the return of the Calestial Toymaker and Sil (from "Vengance on Varos"). Here's the link:
Doctor Who's Missing Season
It's not that important now, but think of the impact if these stories had actually made to the screen. If these had been done maybe we would not have gotten "Trial of a Time Lord" |

There's also a documentary about the "lost season" on The Trial of a Time Lord DVD box set.
I don't usually care at all about non-TV versions of 'Who but I might actually get these CDs when they are released.
Here's a photo of the cast for Mission to Magnus. |

The voices for Doctor 6 and Peri are convincing. |

...Also the the story "Mission to Magnus" was done as a Target novelisation. It was written by the writer of the episode(s) Philllip Martin and released in 1990.
I do remember that there was a radio play during the "break". It was "Slipback" - and it too was novelised by Target. The copyright on the book shows 1986 (and the original script was 1985) and it is written by Eric Saward. I've never heard the play but I have the novelisation.
PS: Lets make the address in the above post a link:

I found an article on Digital Spy that talks about Big Finish making the recodings of the "missing season".
Here's a link to that story:

This was posted April 5th but I didn't see this until today. |

I will get these of course but truthfully that was when the show was in REAL trouble, script wise, quality wise, acting wise. I love Colin and to a lesser extent Nicola but I think the scripts stunk all around. I read the NIGHTMARE FAIR and found it...poor.
I read the other missing stories that they released as novels and found them...bad as well. No one had a new thought in those days and when they did, it was all badly executed and with poorly written dialog and annoying fight scenes between the Doctor and Peri!
I'm sure Big Finish will polish these up, rewrite them and make them better than they were before. Some of the others...won't be released because of the deals falling through and one won't be made at all: the one with the Autons, Rani, and the Master. Too bad, I was hoping for a complete set of what happened or would have happened had the show not been so bad the year before...
I was also hoping that half written serials and outlines would be adapted but...if you think about it, there were reasons they weren't made in the first place--some of these reasons were budget I'm sure but the other reasons are probably because most of them weren't very good. |

| SLIPBACK was not that bad, taken that it's very HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY and that's a great source but the ending to SLIPBACK is...rushed and strange. |

You love Colin, but feel the show stunk acting-wise? I'll go along with you on the scripts, which definitely had some problems, but its somewhat unfair to blame that on the actors, surely?

Gotta take issue with some of that too. There were definitely some new thoughts in Seasons 22-23 - VENGEANCE ON VAROS, REVELATION OF THE DALEKS, some of the concepts within the TRIAL OF A TIME LORD. But way too much filler bickering in the TARDIS and ill-advised Doctor characterisation led by the production team. I will certainly agree with you there!

Actually the reason that YELLOW FEVER.... (the episode with the Master, the Rani and the Autons), along with THE NIGHTMARE FAIR, THE ULTIMATE EVIL, and MISSION TO MAGNUS is all down the "hiatus" and the change in concept of the season. Not down to quality at all. (Although, I was not impressed with the novelisations of the latter 3 - but I am hopeful that the Big Finish versions of the 2 that they can adapt will come out well!) |

I dn't mean to slight Colin's acting at all but TIMELASH...OMG. ANyway, I meant most of the guest stars' acting. Nicola desn't really light up any real acting memoirs either. Her delievery is usuallly very poor TBH.
I'm thinking of almost anyone in the Sil episodes, almost everyone but Glitz and Dibber in The TRAIL PART ONE story, ditto MINDWARP, which has to be the worst DW story ever (Bar TIME AND THE RANI). The acting is okay in MARK OF THE RANI, most of TWIN DILEMMA, ATTACK of the CM (except for those two half Cyber human felows, they are awful), REVELATION(well overacting in that from almost all involved except the regulars but Peri's "Doctor!" as she runs for the statue that is fallig on him is pathetic!).
Correct about Varos. I think VENGEANCE is original for that time but the execution is awful. The direction, the scrpts, the dialog for a good part of Colin's time was just horrible. I do like TWIN DILEMMA believe it or not and I do like MARK OF THE RANI but...thats about it really. Parts of VERVOIDS are okay but that ending. The Dalek story is okay too I guess but the rest? THE TWO DOCTORS is embarassing at worst, with some scares at best but overall a mess. TIMELASH part one is almost unwatchable. TRIAL is a giant mess and borefest. I also hate Sil as an enemy or as an alien. I don't find him menacing and I do find him annoying. |

You have a very interesting concept of what makes good acting, Chase. You really do.
No mention of Michael Jayston? And you think Dibber can act? |

Jayston is of course great but..not really in this. He has screen presense but that is not enough to give his poor overblown dialog and his silly character's silly existence and lame excuse technobabble wise for being.
That said, he's great when the Valeyard returns in one of the Big Finish alternate Doctor audios and the script makes the Valeyard...both menacing and believable. No easy feat.
TRIAL, no matter how it can be explained away by fans (and it's fun to try and fun to read some of the explanations and some even make a lot of sense...more than TRIAL) is a mess storywise, and character wise. What logic is there to anything the Valeyard does from moment to moment? It is as if they were making it up on the spot.
Dibber can't really act that well however as part of Glitz's double duty team, he and Glitz make one of the better Robert Holmes double acts (much better than the Jago and Litefoot one everyone raves about in TALONS). |

Actually, this is not that far from the truth regarding Trial. Robert Holmes, who wrote the first four episodes and was to pen the last two, was ill at the time and passed away after only working on one of the last two episodes. Eric Saward was going to pen the last episode from Holmes' notes, but he had a falling out with John Nathan-Turner and Pip and Jane Baker were selected to write the finale without viewing Saward's script or the notes for the episode. It was intended (by Holmes) that the series end on a cliffhanger with the Valeyard and the Doctor both falling into the matirx in an epic struggle. Saward wanted to keep to this vision, but JNT wanted a less dark ending. This caused their falling out. |
