I have read both Script Doctor and Through Time. I really liked Script Doctor, as it is a series of reminiscences from the last three years of the production of the classic series. The other book reads more like a fan history of the series with Cartmel bashing some of the old stories for things that he praises the McCoy stories for. I think it went a bit beyond just favoritism for ones own work.

Thanks, Taras. I'm trying to decide whether to pick this one up. I generally like that kind of book, but I'm still pretty unfamiliar with the McCoy era. Does he talk about the so-called masterplan?

    Ad freakin' nauseum.

As a way to understand a contrasting view of Doctor Who I suppose it's instructive. But the book really grates on my soul when he starts speaking of other eras than his own, and he puts his era up as the "superior" version. The man has a right to criticize other eras, of course, but I fundamentally disagree with most of his conclusions. I had to throw the book down several times in disgust just to get through it all.

But then, I believe Andrew Cartmel is the worst thing that ever happened to Doctor Who. And, given my disdain for Eric Saward and JNT, that's saying something.

The one good thing I'll say for the book is that his love of McCoy and Aldred are readily apparent, and it's honorable that he should have such faith in his lead actors. On the other hand, this just shows what a terrible judge of acting ability he really was—and that speaks volumes about his abilities as a script editor.

"I think of myself as ambitious in casting terms, and I know that Bonnie [Langford] has the potential to make the part totally unirritating . . ." — JNT, 1986
