    Big Finish #85 - "Red"

    Sylvester McCoy

This is the kind of story which lends credence to those who think McCoy is the worst Doctor there is.

In this sad episode, I'm convinced they chose McCoy as the Doctor just to get him to roll those "r"s whenever the word "red" is repeated over and over again.

It's practically unbearable to listen to.

Sigh... I like McCoy... I'd like to slap the person who put him in this audio play.

Anyone else hear it? Other opinions? Agreements? Dissents?

    Sean.

One solid hope is worth a cartload of uncertainties.

I haven't heard it yet myself.

Badwolf reviewed it for us earlier this month here.

    Cheers,
    Louis

It is an okay story and rather typical of the poor qc that BF have been guilty of lately.

I got the impression that this was an 8th Doctor story that they couldn't release in the usual way because they had recently released Something Inside which could have also called Red. Basically the same story with a different setting. The one thing that did a lot to save Red was the performance of Bonnie Langford hich was one her best as Mel.

    Forget the shooty dog thing!

Yes, even if you weren't previously aware of McCoy's rolling of Rs you couldn't escape it in this one. He went into a positive orgasmic overload on it. Prior to this the only episode where I'd really been annoyed by it was in Live 34.

Spoiler alert: The other aspect of this story that I thought disturbing was the way they all talked calmly about what to do while people were dying all around them. It reminded me of the sequence near the end of Doomsday where the Daleks were exterminating everyone in the streets below while up above the Doctor and Rose talk in relaxed fashion about void particles - no Doctor, don't you worry about all the innocent people being slaughtered around you. You take your own sweet time, mate. No need to rush.

That all said the sequence in question made for a very dramatic sequence but it just seemed a bit out of character for the Doctor to seem so apparently untouched by all the death occuring on the screens in front of him.
