Hello, forum.
I've been pretty hard on Torchwood. I watched the first four episodes, despised lots of what I saw and was dissapointed with what was left, and then shelved the show. I was also pretty vocal in my distate for the program.
Over the last 3 days, I watched the rest of the season, and I feel that I judged a bit harshly. It's not a perfect series. Sometimes it's not even very good. But I think in the final few episodes the show came very close to accomplishing what it was trying to do. It still was full of cliches and flawed, irredeemable characters that I almost uniformly despised, yet I found myself liking the show nonetheless.
So I want to say, Torchwood, I was a bit heavy. You aren't Doctor Who, but maybe you weren't trying to be. You aren't perfect, but my expectations were so high that maybe I never gave you a fair shake. It was your first season. Maybe you were just trying to find your voice. I'm sorry, Torchwood.

The problem was that expectations were raised for a show that Torchwood was not. If they would have marketed it properly, we may not have had such a negative reaction from those who expected something different based on the hype. I stuck with it, and it grew to an enjoyable program once I jettisoned any expectations and took the program for what it was.

couldn't agree with you more. I kept hearing X-Files over and over again. This show was not a British X-Files. But then again, I'm not sure that they knew what they wanted the show to be until maybe halfway through the series. Then they seemed to hit a sort of stride. |

| The problem with Torchwood was that it didn't give us what we were promised from watching the main series of Doctor Who. I quite liked the idea of this pseudo-faschist organisation investigating the unknown with a secret mission to restore the British Empire to its former glory. Instead we got a series about a group of social misfits who couldn't get through an episode without either shagging each other or becoming emotional wrecks (or - in some episodes - both). While the stories were interesting in their premise, by the end of the series I was fed up with the endless guessing games of who would be shagging who (no pun intended) before the closing credits rolled. |

My view is no different to those posted already - It's something I've warmed to, but I can't see I'm overly excited about it. I quite liked some of the episodes, but some weren't so good.
I won't/haven't bought any DVDs of this, and unless it's a rock-bottom bargain basement job, I won't be.
But I must admit, I quite fancy Gwen Cooper! |

| Yes, I, too, I'm much in agreement here. I haven't finished it yet but the show seems to be trying so hard to be adult with its sexual content that its confusing the storytelling in the show. Putting that purely juvenile sex-alien episode what, second?, in the series put me off quick. That would have been an acceptably light-hearted romp after a show like "Countrycide". Like Taras says, I try not to have too many expectations (and filter out the socializing of the Torchwood team, cripes- they are annoying people, why sleep with any of them?) and I like some of what I've seen or at least can appreciate the writers trying to make serious sci-fi. |

Well that seems to be a tactic these days.
If you watched the series premier of "Star Trek: Enterprise", that was the one where the hot crewlady (T'pal) had to be rubbed down with "decontamination gel" after using the teleporter.
They went to the T&A immediately, without even pretending the show wasn't about a hot vulcan.
I didn't watch much after that... apprently the show got quite good in later seasons, but I stopped watching. That and the eratic schedule making it difficult to find, killed it for me.
