I know this convention is over 6 months away, but my wife and I have made a vow to *have more fun* and have already bought our tickets for DragonCon 2007 being held labor day weekend in Atlanta, GA.
I don't see any Doctor Who guests on their confirmed celebs list, but I guess I just wanted to poll you folks to see who usually attends, and how much you like/dislike it. I've been living in the Southeast US for about 6.5 years, and this will be my first time. [Louis-- I'll gladly sport my "Podshock" T-shirt for the benefit of the Gallifreyan Embassy. ]
In other convention news, I just heard today that OmegaCon 2008, which is a purely Science Fiction convention, will be held in Birmingham, AL (where I live) in March 2008. Don't know anything about their line-up, and it looks like their website isn't up-to-date, but a student of mine says she is working with the organizers. |

Did you say "74,384,338 to 1 against"? That's my lucky number!

I attended DragonCon back in 2002 with my wife and we had a blast. Here's my blog post from back then: Click here.
One thing that I really wasn't expecting was the huge number of people dressed up in costumes--people just started showing off their costumes in an open area of a hotel--amazing. And I lost count of how many stormtroopers were going through the hotel (very cool to see them in glass elevators headed up to their rooms--looked like a movie). I've been to Origins several times, GenCon (once), and Dragoncon and I have to say that Dragoncon was my favorite.

The last DragonCon had a decent Firefly/Serenity track according to a couple of Firefly podcasts I subscribe to... I haven't been to one, though, but it seems to be quite popular. |

It all depends on what you are into. I was at the last Dragon*Con, and it was decent, but it was literally FULL of anime geeks and card game geeks.
I think the history of the con is that it is a game convention, so the other stuff is sort of secondary.
I'm more into the comics and some of the genre stuff, myself. Saw a really cool panel with Dean Haglund, one of the Lone Gunmen from X-Files. Also saw a hilarious panel with a bunch of cartoon voice actors.
Outside of that, it's just a midsize show. You could probably do it all in a day. It's definitely worth going to at least once, though.
as for Omegacon, I am moving to Birmingham in May from Mobile, so I may be checking that one out with you. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Wow! Great photos! Thanks for posting them. Seeing the cats from New Earth is a nice surprise. Well done. Love the parade as well.
Looks like it was a great deal of fun.
Cheers,

Yeah- Dragon*Con was great.
I just wanted to send a reminder to anyone in the Southeastern U.S. about OmegaCon 2008 to be held in Birmingham, Alabama 14-16 March 2008. (website here) . Featured media guests so far include George Takei and Kevin Sorbo.
Apparently, the local Doctor Who fan club is kinda shy, so they are having trouble getting some Who panels together.
I have actually been invited as a guest to be on some panels (although not related to DW). See if you can figure out which one is me! |

Hey Rocko, Are you going to Dragon*Con 2008? Ive been going every year for the last 7 and it's an amazing con.
Im sure you feel that way after going last year.
For others who are thinking of going, they have a Brit programming track that features panels all day on British shows. There are always a few fan panels on Doctor Who or an author.
They ghave a Torchwood guest this year, Gareth David Lloyd. --Billy |
