:D Thanks to Netflix, I've been submerging myself in Dr.Who on a daily basis. (<i>No really, my list of movies to be sent out, I've got just about every Dr. Who episode on DVD lined up, except the ones I own, of course)</i>
At any rate, Friday night I popped in the William Hartnell era DVD, "Lost in Time." I did not realize that this was a collecation of rarities and lost episodes.
What I wanted to share was how impressed and moved I was with all that I watched. I previously posted to the forumn about "The Dalek Invasion of Earth," and got quite a lot of feedback. You must understand that when I discoverd the good Doctor as an adolecent, I saw the tail end of Pertwee and went from there. It was before internet, before big video chain stores carrying tv series... and where I lived and grew up DID NOT have any kind of comic store or place to revel in all that is Dr. Who. Kind of like experiencing it in a vacuum tube, eh?
So, please do not jump on me as I share some things that those in the William Hartnell forum alredy know. Take my observations as a child discovering something that was always there but it didn't see before.
I was both impressed and touched by watching all these episodes in "Lost in Time." To see actor who would play Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, cool. To see other companions other than Zoe & Jaime, even cooler. To see what they did for set design, impressive. The actors chosen for any of the given roles, masterful.
But what really made me take pause and tear up at times (no really, not being sarcastic) was Hartnell himself. The range in emotion he showed in Crusade episodes... especially the tenderness he shows to Victoria when she is scared. Wow! Something I was not expecting. Thought the original Doctor would tell her to keep a stiff upper lip. But to show that kindness and caring by holding her close and resting his head on her, very touching! But there is also the flamboyant/playful behavior when he visits the merchant selling fabrics and stolen clothing articles. He pulls a fast one by throwing closes out the tent door. Wow again!
Though there was not a compete series to sit and enjoy, as a previous Dr. Who fan finding his love for the series again (mostly thanks to the discovery of Doctor Who Podshock)-- It was <i><b>out of this world!

Yes, there are some gems in the missing episodes. Over the last year, I had listened to the audio soundtracks of all the missing stories after having watched the Lost in Time DVDs. It is unfortunate that visual "masterpieces" like Marco Polo have no episodes remaining. Yes, William Hartnell was a great actor, and had a strong love for the series. I sometimes wonder what he could have done with the role if he was healthier, and wasn't losing his memory.
When I first watched Doctor Who on television, it was with the Tom Baker episodes from Robot to Invasion of Time, then as I mentioned in a few other threads, I found episode 4 of Caves of Androzani and saw two additional Doctors for the first time. Being in NYC, I had Forbidden Planet and major book and other chain stores, where I could eventually find some Doctor Who merchandise, mostly concentrating on the odd issue of Doctor Who Magazine here and there. My first exposure to the Hartnell Doctor was on a New Jersey PBS station that showed his stories in movie format on Saturday nights. Some times, I had to battle though the snow of static to catch the stories, but I followed these broadcasts religiously, and eventually discovered Troughton's and Pertwee's Doctors.

Before the Beginning set came along this was best who DVD just wait till our US freinds see the beginning box set they are going to be blown away.
Best extra on this new begining is Dr who Orgins |
