A Fix With Sontarans Views: 695

I know it was only a special production for a kid who won a contest but that short 8:30 piece (available on "The Two Doctors" DVD) makes me think that The Sixth Doctor and Tegan might have made good traveling companions. They both had a kind of biting wit and stubborness which may have played well. Or it may have been a weekly exercise in "one upmanship."

    Any thoughts?

Let's see. Bad Doctor with bad companion. Oh yes, please. Sign me up.

It's easy to say now, after we've heard the second Sixth Doctor on audio, and we've seen the general renaissance of the companion role, that they might've worked well together. Put Colin instead in some tweedy professorial garb and make his character consistently rough and smooth, within the same story. Put Tegan in some comfy clothes, and make her natural curiosity get the better of her nasty habit of making herself out to be a victim of the Doctor's travels. Make them both characters instead of caricatures. Then maybe you've got a winner. In fact, probably you've got a winner.

Virtually any hack writer could make a go of them these days.

But at the time? With the characters as they actually were? No, no, no. Surely "A Fix with Sontarans" proves how absolutely awful that would've been. Just . . . visually. Honestly, I would've lost respect for Michael Grade if he had that combo in the TARDIS and he didn't cancel the programme.

"I think of myself as ambitious in casting terms, and I know that Bonnie [Langford] has the potential to make the part totally unirritating . . ." JNT, 1986
