I seem to recall an awful lot of grousing at the conclusion of "Smith and Jones" about the Jones family itself. The general opinion seemed to be that people disliked the inclusion of the family, to one degree or another. Now that we've come to the end of the series, I wonder what people's assessment of the family is. To be sure, the previews for Episode 13 would seem to suggest the Jones family are set for an explosive finale, so we might have to hold off a bit. But still, I wonder if people have generally thought the Joneses have made the series stronger or weaker? What things that concerned you in "Smith and Jones" never materialized? Was anything set up in that initial episode surprising once it reached its fruition later on?

I think the weren't used enough and this has made the series weaker. Now that they have more attention in the final episode it would be a good twist if Martha's family can be used more predominately like it was hinted towards with the direction of Lazarus Experiement with the mom having to have the phone calls monitored.

I think Tish has the best part so far, the rest haven't really had much involvement. As it stands now, her brother didn't even need to be a part of the series, what has Leo really provided but a blood relation to Martha?

Unless they utilize this family more, they shouldn't be cast for S4.

I don't really care much for Martha's family, nor did I care much for Jackie and Mickey with Rose. I ultimately grew a fondness for Mickey when he finally grew a backbone and stayed on parallel-Earth. Jackie and Mickey were used primarily for comic relief, but whereas this season has a slightly darker tone with The Doctor dealing with the departure of Rose and his dwelling on the fact that he thought he was the last of his kind, it makes sense not to do the same with Martha's family. I like Martha a lot more than I liked Rose, but personally I could do without companions' families entirely, if for no other reason than we might someday get a significant amount of off-Earth stories! The familial ties seem to always drag them back for one reason or another. Maybe the family drama was added to reach an audience beyond the die-hard Who fans that'll watch regardless of what's shown each week...
