Looks like the Torchwood staff will have to behave around Martha - to keep her 'child friendly' for her Doctor Who family fans.

To be honest, I would like them to turn down the sex and swearing for the whole series. I'm no prude, I love my "Sopranos" and my "Six Feet Under" where realism and accuracy are vital. But Torchwood is not based on reality, it is, after all, a Sci-Fi/Fantasy series and the bad language and sex just feels forced in and totally unnecessary to the story or feel of an episode. No problem with the blood and guts though as that doesn't seem to feel so forced! |

| Well, it's good she won't be dancing with Owen—no woman should be forced to do that—but I was rather hoping for a little dancin' with someone. She deserves it, after having to deal with a year of rejection. |

Well hopefully she has hooked up with her 'doctor' friend - the would be freedom fighter (if time hadn't rolled back) - and is now (Torchwood time) in a steady relationship.

| Yeah, but I hope it's not a "done deal" by the time we rejoin her. Fine, she can't "dance". But can't she at least be courted, or do some wooing of her own? Can't there be a little drama attached to her getting into this relationship so that her character actually grows? |

So... langauge and sex are bad, violence is ok?
I don't know about you, but I can go out this afternoon and have a better chance of hearing an "F-bomb" than seeing somebody get stabbed, so I don't know why one feels forced and the other doesn't. |

This seems sort of reasonable, but they fail to remember that the star of the show, John Barrowman, has also appeared on both programmes. how do they explain that one if they didn't censor Captain Jack . Younger children aren't supposed to be watching in the first place so what difference does it make? Let Martha swear like a sailor, I say |

I have no problem with sex, violence or bad language in television as long as it actually works within that programme. As I stated before, I think Soprano's, Six Feet Under and the highly under-rated Carnivale (which I think is the finest HBO production to date) are excellent programmes and contains much of all of the above (I would even say that they are essential to the quality of the programmes). My point was that I feel the sex and bad language doesn't ring true in Torchwood. It just feels forced. I don't remember seeing a violent or gory scene in Torchwood which took me out of the programme like the sex and language did! Funnily enough, I have been reading the Torchwood books and have really enjoyed them. They contain sex, violence and bad language and I have no problem with it at all so I can only assume that the reason it feels wrong in the series is down to how the production team have approached it! |

I would have to agree. A lot of it seemed very forced to me as well. |

It's very 'teenage - I've discovered sex' - and it does jar with the rest of the adventure.
PS I can see you've been a member of a while Nenya but glad your posting.
PPS Like your snowman Dalek avatar - but the first picture you tried yesterday was MUCH prettier

I joined, posted once and somehow the site drifted away from me for a few months. But I'm back now! Thanks for remembering!
P.S. So, should I change my icon back? j/k |

I can't believe I've been too lazy to track down Season 1 of Torchwood. Good or bad, I must admit this thread has sparked my interest again. A Doctor Who spin-off series with sex & violence (albeit forced), and some good ol' fashioned swearing - sounds like a recipe for an interesting evening.
p.s. I just want to say that daveac is now officially my hero. |

A Hero eh!
I wonder what my power is - it must be like Peter (in Heroes) - whilst I'm in the company of clever and interesting people - some of it rubs off on me
If you watch Torchwood - stick with it - my favourite episode is number 10 'Out of Time' but there are other very good ones.
