    8th Doctor Adventures Series 2 Views: 2204
     Wednesday, March 12 2008 @ 12:42 PM EDT
I haven't listened to the story yet, as I'm still only finishing up No More Lies, but I did sneak a listen to the new theme and I'm not impressed. I liked the 8th Doctor's theme (not at first, but it grew on me) and don't know why they changed it to this.

I'm going "Full Circle" and putting my avatar back to what it was when I first joined. :)

I love David Arnold's take on the theme and am very sad to hear it's been replaced. I wonder if the license on it expired...?

[Quote  by:  DarthSkeptical]What's odd is that I'm suddenly more interested in Charlie than ever, after the smashing "The Condemned" . . .

Now that I agree on (finished The Condemned on the train ride to work this morning). Maybe Charlie and #8 were getting a bit stale, but I'm having trouble liking Lucie as much as I enjoy Charlie. I haven't listened to Dead London yet but hope to get started on this new series soon.

I must say, this "series 2" 8th Doctor adventures does sort of feel like a way for Big Finish to get more money out of the subscribers.... probably not a fair assessment, but here I am paying more for what is not a spin-off.

Ah, but you are getting more classic Doctor Who stories per year... Win-win in my book!

Just reviewed 'Sisters of the Flame' and i'm mightly impressed. Anyway here's the review:

Well that's much better! After being slightly disappointed with last month’s offering, we reach part one of this year’s ‘finale’ and its brilliant!

Okay, it’s only the first part and part two could end up an absolute mess but everything about this story seemed to just fit into place rather nicely. Nick Briggs has easily justified his position at Big Finish after being criticized by fans, for the fact that he was ‘doing everything’.

For Tom Baker fans, the episode is pretty easy to figure out from the title. ‘The Sisters of The Flame’ refer to the ‘Sisterhood of Karn’, who first appeared in 1976 in the serial ‘The Brain of Morbius’. The Sisterhood are a cult of psychic woman, who have recently been unscrupulously ripped off in ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ (ooh controversial!). In this audio, they are no longer on Karn as a businessman - Zarodnix (Kenneth Colley) is buying up all the planets he can, even those that don’t offer anything. But why?

Meanwhile Lucie makes a new friend in Rosto (Alexander Siddig), a grasshopper-type creature called a Trel, after the Doctor is kidnapped. With The Doctor gone, Lucie has to investigate the mystery and find him. But with Time Lords sniffing around and a certain chant about ‘flames and fires’, will she ever get to the bottom of it?

The story is written very well and is probably the best ‘set up’ story that has come from the 8th Doctor Adventures range. The first parts of ‘Blood of the Daleks’ and ‘Human Resources’ are pretty decent, but they just don’t ‘pull you in’ as much as this first part. Nick Briggs has done a terrific job, just keep away from that mixing desk, eh Nick?

We are treated to more great performances. Sheridan Smith in particular is outstanding and this just tops everything she done so far, for me anyway! I can’t really wait for the second part, which is why I’m holding back on the top mark. I think these two-parters should be released on a double CD, rather than two single ones. Maybe it’s the month wait and the extra £££’s that the fans will have to pay? Oh well, hopefully the quality will keep for the next instalment!

    4.5/5

I couldn't agree with you more, Colin. Seriously people: RUN, don't walk, to download this episode from Big Finish today.

After a mediocre season which was largely a letdown on the promise of season 1 comes this absolutely brilliant release. It feels like it belongs in the narrative and characterization established in the first series, no doubt due to the return of characters from last year's season finale. However, it seamlessly works as a sequel to The Brain of Morbius.

Lucie is back to her old fiesty-but-secretly-sensitive self. Both Sheridan Smith and the largely absent Eighth Doctor hit every line with a precision and enthusiasm that has sometimes been noticeably absent this season.

If you were turned off by earlier releases this year, come back at least for this one. It looks as though its on its way to being some of the best fun Big Finish have ever given us. And if you've never heard a Lucie Miller story at all, this is actually a good one to start out on, since she's the effective lead and you don't really need the backstory to appreciate what's going on.

    5-star experience.

So what are you saying...that this is the "Doctor light" episode of the series? Wink

Me two, the new theme almost seems like it hasn't been finished properly.

Kinda, yah Smile Or the Lucie heavy Smile Either way it's fandamntastic. It's maybe a little more fair to say that they become separated and more attention is given to her side of the story. He doesn't just appear at the begnning and end of the story, though, as in this televised season's double-banked episodes. He's just better used in a subtler role here.
