from ign.com
It looks like relatively unknown Irish actor David Murray won't be playing Destro in the G.I. Joe movie after all. The lead villain role has reportedly recast, with English actor Christopher Eccleston (Dr. Who, 28 Days Later) now playing the Scottish arms dealer.
IESB.net first reported, and now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed, that the last minute casting change is due to Murray, best known for his role as a jumpy thug in Batman Begins, being unable to score a visa in time to work in the U.S.
G.I. Joe begins filming this week in Los Angeles under the direction of Stephen Sommers. The cast includes Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Marlon Mayans and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

he will be playing destro, arm's dealer & cobra secound in commad.

| Snake-Eyes is a pretty easy roll... his face is always covered and he doesn't speak... Ray Park should be able to handle the martial arts so that'll be good... |

Congratulations, people behind GI Joe. I would never have seen your movie until this news came out.
(And that goes double to the people who cast Simon Pegg in Star Trek.) |

| I hosted the Ray Park panel at I-con 27. I think Louis has audio of it. We talked about the G.I. Joe movie extensively. |

The part pertaining to the G.I. Joe movie will be in episode 2 of JUMP The POD, now in post-production. It should be out tomorrow sometime.

OK, I know almost nothing about the G.I. Joe story (outside of the original toy line dating back before my time). This photo with C.E. looks nothing like the illustration posted in the first message. He is not silver and bald. Unless this is before something happens to him which turns him silver and bald (sort looks like a clothed Silver Surfer).
Cheers,

Nothing to worry about at all with the CE pic not matching up to the drawing, above. Especially in "modern" GI Joe comics the whole schtick is [Spoiler, cause really it's likely to be a central surprise of the movie:] that the "silver" appearance is derived by a mask that has been passed down through the generations of the Destro clan. Not that there are actually all that many people to offend by diverting from the comics interpretation. In the first place, sales for GI Joe haven't been exactly fantastic in decades. And in the second, there have been a fair number of continuity reboots anyway. It's only quite recently that comic creators have really been trying to get a clean narrative for the characters. In a real sense, CE has a chance here to "create" Destro in a way that hasn't generally been available to actors portraying comic book villains. No one is seriously going to care if he contradicts the already-contradictory comics.
But I digress. CE's photo here isn't in contradiction with several different comic interpretations of the character.
For those who want to be spoiled even further (or just have their doubts of the picture assuaged), here's a likely version of the character you'll see in the movie. Wouldn't read it, though, if you know NOTHING about G.I. Joe. It's likely to lessen your appreciation of the film. |
