I thought we could have a thread with advice for people who have not been to cons in the past and maybe give a few hints and tips to those who have been.

come on guys share the wisdom!

    My advice?

    1) Turn up early. weather its a UK con or a US one you will be in ques. dont complain. just go with it and chat. make new friends. you never know where that may go. DONT worry about talking to strangers as you already have something in common.

2)Take a bottle of water and maybe a sandwich with you. you dont know when you will eat and the hotels that run these places sometimes see them as a lisence to mug people with charges. Also you will be able to eat when waiting.

3)Be polite to the guests. youd be surprised by some of the comments ive heard in ques about guests when they have walked past. Remember they are people too and a bad con experience for one guest may put them off for life.

4)Find out how to ask questions in the Q and A sessions. some have questions taken at the end. some have an interviewer with questions summited before. some have mics that get passed around.

    5) NO FLASH photos. Come on Guys. when you are told not to take pics. Dont. Do you want some one coming inot your place of work and snapping away? Set your camera to a low light setting and you sho0uld be fine.

    6) TURN OFF your phone. NOT to vibrate or silent. but OFF. the signals will mess up the speakers and its just impolite. Do you really want the wrath of one of your heroes.

6)b - change your ring tome for the event. If your mobile rings when you are in the dealers hall and its the WHO theme. 2000 other people with the same ring tone will check their phones too

    7) DONT over spend in the dealers hall. KNOW what you are looking for and budget.

    8) GET a copy of the events and use a highlighter to work out where you want to go and know the routes around the venue. (Do this on the way there as the events sheet will be online the night before and is usually fixed in place by then) PLANING is everything.

    9) DONT cry and stamp your feet if the stars have to cancel because of work. I KNOW its awful but real life happens. DONT ask for a refund as you arnt entitled to one. Really. ITS IN THE booking notes.

    10) Costumes. REALLY you dont have to do this. Some people do and some people dont. ITS optional. JUST be yourself. HAVE fun. if its your first con dont dress up. Maybe a stick of celery in your coat so people know you are a who fan

    11) TAKE something to get signed. THIS will save you a fortune. Buy a BIG book with the history of the show with lots of images in it - you know the sort of thing. and get every guest to sign that rather than buy a photo from their pile. UNLESS you want to do that. YOU could always fund your CON habbit by getting autos for people and selling them on ebay or something. thats your call. JUST watch your cash.

    12) Dont ask for Autographs if you see a guest at the Bar. there are set times for that and they want to have a good time too... The UK guests will be at the bar!

    anything else?

oh yeah. just relax and have a good time.
