I don't know if this is a McCoy comment or a general comment, but it was mentioned during McCoy's tenure as the Doctor that he had been Merlin. I always wondered if they'd ever come back to that (wouldn't have to be with McCoy as the Doctor, but it would be cool if they'd show him as Merlin in flashbacks).

I believe you are referring to the story, Battlefield. As far as I know, I don't think it was mentioned again. But I am not up on all the audio adventures and novels that came afterwards.

Having said that, after poking around a bit, I believe there is mention in the book, The Shadows of Avalon. According to what I found, in the book, the Brigadier asks the Doctor if Morgaine (from Battlefield) originated from Avalon, which the Doctor replies with a negative. He also mentions that he’s going to be Merlin to Queen Mab.

In an interview, the author of the book, Paul Cornell stated the following: "My intention was that Avalon be totally divorced from the sideways reality that Morgaine came from. The Doctor being Merlin, of course, means nothing to Mab. He was clutching at straws. Not that my intention matters if someone else gets a good theory or story out of it."

In the novelization of Battlefield which I have not read, it is said that there is a flashback (or "flashforward") of a scene of the Doctor as Merlin.

There may have been some other mentions and/or inferences in short stories, I am not sure. Information is a bit dodgy that I could find.

Based on how the Doctor is described as Merlin in the Battlefield novelization, it is thought that this future incarnation of the Doctor is the same one in the short story "Good Companions" and "Revenants" neither of which I have read.

Perhaps others can shed some light on this?

We will see if any of the new stories with David Tennant and beyond will explore the idea or not. At this point, I haven't heard anything.

It was also mentioned in "Lungbarrow"--as far as I know, the last chronological McCoy story. As near as I recall (it's been a few years): after the TARDIS reconfigures itself into the "McGann steampunk" look, he's leaving for Skaro to retrieve the Master's remains, Romana gives him her sonic screwdriver (thus completing the setup for the '96 movie), and Ace is having feelings of ominous dread that she'll never see him again. His last words before leaving for Skaro are something like "Don't worry, I just remembered, I haven't been Merlin yet."

So I suppose we can assume 1) He did the Merlin thing right before the Movie, 2) He was merlin in some alternate crossover or retroactively wiped out timeline (kinda like how the Doctor and his companions never remember meeting future Doctors), or 3) Maybe Morgaine mistook him for somebody else.

I do hate to be contrary but it was pretty much implied that Merlin was a potential future incarnation of the Doctor, and not necessarily the McCoy incarnation. Books are not canon though so that rules out the Battlefield novelisation and The Shadows of Avalon. But as far as the actual TV episode is concerned, Merlin has not happened yet for the Doctor, which he tells Ace when she asks him. He says Merlin is in his personal future.

But we will see, just like the Valeyard is supposed to be in the Doctor's future, as a possible incarnation, only developmenst in the new series will tell us for sure.

Wouldn't that be fun to have the current Doctor revisit this! Just a little more return to the old series from the new Big Grin

I agree, this is one episode that needs to be revisited.

Well, "canon" is a personal thing, and for me DWM comics are a part of my personal canon, on a higher order than most of the whole of the McCoy era. In this regard, it's pretty clear that Merlin and the Doctor are different beings, having been seen in the last Fourth Doctor and first Fifth Doctor stories. Got no problem with Merlin being a Time Lord, though . . .

Another point to be made in this discussion is that the Merlin in "Battlefield" isn't the Merlin of Earth's mythological past, but quite clearly one from another dimension. Because the writers threw in "parallel worlds" into the mix, all bets are really off for what it means for the Doctor to "be Merlin". The implication might be that out own mythology is in fact based in another dimension, but it could just as easily be that we're meant to believe that the Merlin whom the Doctor will become isn't "our" Merlin whatsoever.

personally i liked the idea that the doctor was/would be merlin and it would be great to see it explored further

Such a beautiful thing is always good that it is fascinating. However, a good thing is beautiful always.
