The Baby is 60 - Computer Anniversary Views: 715

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of The Baby Manchester University will be have a special day this Friday. (21st June 1948 to 20th June 2008)

    Check out these pages:-

'The Small Scale Experimental Machine to give the Manchester invention its full title successfully executed its first program on 21 June 1948 and paved the way for the computers, iPods and mobile phones we all take for granted today.' see:-

Third EDIT:- How's this for a quote from the 'Baby Tour' page:-

'F.C. Williams later said of the first successful run:

"A program was laboriously inserted and the start switch pressed. Immediately the spots on the display tube entered a mad dance. In early trials it was a dance of death leading to no useful result, and what was even worse, without yielding any clue as to what was wrong. But one day it stopped, and there, shining brightly in the expected place, was the expected answer. It was a moment to remember. This was in June 1948, and nothing was ever the same again.'

PS - small family connections - my brother-in-law worked in the old 'Baby' room when he started work at M'C University and now my daughter is involved with the event organisation.

    Cheers, daveac

I am aware of Steve Furbur from my early interest in home computing when the BBC Mirco project started here in the UK.
