I only had one issue with the beetle, and that wasn't until I watched the Confidential. Why didn't they PAINT it? Give it a bit of color, not just solid blackish? During the Confidential it reminded me of those spider rings you get out of the candy dispensers for $0.25, you know? boring plastic, not life.
Other than that, during the show, I just thought? An Earth beetle the size of a beagle? why not! It'll probably survive "new-clear" (homage to the US president) anihilation, so why wouldn't it turn up on a different planet? |

I never got the hoopla about the Talons of Weng Chiang either. Guess I need to rewatch it, but at the time I found it a bit boring.
I can take the early cybermen. I can take the dinosaurs in Invasion (of the Dinosaurs). I can take the episode where you see the crack in the wall before K9 pushes it.
Because it's all backed up with a good story. Too many other things out there try to get by on slick looks alone and don't concentrate enough on the story. Firefly shined in that aspect - yeah, not full of lasers, aliens, etc... but a good story line.
BTW - I did stop watching after Survival. The show just didn't seem to continue as strongly after that. |

| well, what a silly reason to stop watching a tv show. I can see if you didn't like the story. |

The only time I stopped watching Doctor Who was during the McCoy era as I couldn't easily find it on TV in my area. But getting back to the shoddy special effects: Ever since I could remember, Doctor Who has had really bad special effects, but the effects were not why I watched the show.
I enjoyed the stories. When I look back and think about all the great episodes over the years, I am happy to have been able to see shows from Pertwee on up. Doctor Who isn't hard sci-fi. Rather it's a blend between fantasy and science fiction. With the new series (that has somewhat decent special effects), I'm happy that there's good stories ("Girl in the Fireplace," "Blink," and "Turn Left" are great stories), solid acting and up to date special effects. No, it's not perfect, but I still love it.

There was one effect in last night's episode where I just paused the video, looked to my wife and said "Ok, now there's an effect that looks no better than it would've looked in the old series".
Obviously, most effects are 1000x better than Classic Who, but a bad one still slips through now and then.
Although, to be honest, the only other one that comes to mind is going all the way back to "Rose", where Mickey getting sucked into the trash can made me wonder if the effects really would be good or not.
But then, my wife is also one of those ones who still isn't ready to watch Classic Who because the effects are so dated and all that. Maybe one day. |
