Season 14 Gap... Anyone know the reason? Views: 1040

Im compiling the entire run of WHO as WHOstrology... (Dont ask)

and Ive a question... Acording to my research...

there is a gap in the middle of a season.

season 14 has the Deadly Assasin on the 30th Oct 1976 and 20 Noc 1976 and then there is a gap until the 1st Jan when the face of Evil starts.

    Anyone know the reason?

Not sure if you ever figured this one out. In case you haven't, though, the reason was because Holmes was unexpectedly contracted to write "Talons" at about the time that the broadcast of "Assassin" completed in November 1976. Hinchcliffe successfully lobbied for a broadcast delay for "Face" to give not only Holmes, but the production staff who would have to create what Holmes had not yet written, some extra time.

Holmes had originally assigned the story to Robert Banks Stewart, the then-usual season-closing writer for Hinchcliffe/Holmes ("Terror of the Zygons", "The Seeds of Doom"). When Holmes' Summer 1976 holiday ran long due his wife's medical emergency in Germany, however, he was uninformed that Stewart had pulled out and done nothing. It wasn't until 12 November that Holmes got the contract to write the thing himself.

No doubt a part of the reason Hinchcliffe acquiesced to the extra time wasn't just the unavoidably late start. It was also the fact that both men, at the time, believed it was going to be their swan song, and they wanted to make sure things were done well. Hinchcliffe, in comparison with his usual money-saving production attitude, lavished considerable time and money on the affair. After all, he couldn't be fired for a job he no longer held. Moreover, it could be argued that Hinchcliffe was actually "due" a bit more money for this season closer, since the movement of "Zygons" from the end of season 12 to the beginning of season 13 had effectively cut an entire serial out of the budget. Indeed, that "Zygons" ultimately was only a four-parter, though budgeted for six, afforded additional savings to the cumulative budget.

"I think of myself as ambitious in casting terms, and I know that Bonnie [Langford] has the potential to make the part totally unirritating . . ." JNT, 1986
