Other Hartnell stories on DVD? Views: 940
     Wednesday, August 06 2008 @ 10:52 AM EDT
I just recently received the Beginnings boxed set and have finished the first 3 stories (I also watched the Marco Polo telesnaps on it), then I got the Dalek Invasion of Earth, which I really liked!

I was surprised because I remember that the friend who introduced me to Doctor Who tried to get me to watch a few Hartnell episodes on VHS and I found them boring at that time.

The fine folks at WhoNA are sending me The Azteks, The Web Planet and the Time Meddler which will complete the Hartnell stories that are out on DVD here in the US (except for the Lost in Time box set) and I'm very excited to get them and give them a watch.

Here's my question though, are there other stories planned to be released or already released that I'm missing from the first Doctor's era? I remember trying to watch the Keys of Marinus on VHS and I also vividly remember watching Troughton's War Games on VHS here in the states (legit copies my friend bought at a store) so why aren't these on DVD? They're obviously available, why not release them for the 'psycho completists' like myself who can't help but complete every collection they have when possible??

Well groovy 60's story "The War Machines" is coming out (in the UK) on DVD in October. "The Chase" & "The War Games" are being prepared for a near future DVD release although when exactly is anybody's guess.

There are 160-ish stories in the classic era of Doctor Who. The release rate has been a trickle until recently.

My first experience of a Hartnell DVD was the Aztecs, which I enjoyed much more than I thought I would. Then the Daleks' Invasion of Earth and the Beginnings Box set. Which I also loved.
My prior knowledge of the First Doctor really came from the Target books when I was growing up, which I remember as being great reads. I particularly loved the Dalek Invasion, the Crusades and the Tenth Planet. All exciting stuff for a young boy unhindered by dodgy effects.
Of course, the episodes are not perfect but for their time, I really feel they approach being as perfect as they could considering the availble tecnology and budget. As always with most classic Who the enthralling story lines had to compensate. And this this they did with dramatic gusto.
Now, I look forward to the older stories that I have never seen more than those of the later doctors which I have.

I recently bought the Web Planet, and although I have tried to watch to the end several times, i find it tedious. I have literally fall aslepp while trying to watch it 4 times on separate occassions.

The beginning box set, Dalek Invasion of Earth and the Aztecs are far superior IMHO.

Must say I fancy buying the Time Meddler though. Peter Butterworth, it'll be "Carry on Doctor" Wink

The War Machines has been bumped up to be released on 25 August 2008 to fill the gap of The Trial of a Time Lord set being delayed to an October release.

    Cheers,
