OK my top ten but in no particular order:
    10. Halloween - the original - love the silent menace of most of the film.
    9. Prince of Darkness (also John Carpenter) - a group of eight of us once sat and watched this and 5 people refused to go home that night.
    8. The Thing - love sci-fi with horror elements and John Carpenter again ('Nuff said).
    7. The Devil's Backbone - one of Guillermo Del Torro's Spanish language films - ghostly with a heavy touch of Boy's Own - fabulous - recommended to those who've never see it.
    6. Dawn of the Dead - (original but also remake) - nothing scarier than zombies - get to the Mall now!
    5. Sean of the Dead - funny but obeys all the rules so still scarey zombies!
    4. 28 Days Later - Zombies that run. God help us!
    3. Theatre of Blood - because Vincent Price! Poetic justice at its most Shakespearean.
    2. From Beyond the Grave - love Peter Cushin and horror anthologies - this was always the best for me.
1.Invasionm of the Body Snatchers (remake) that final scene with Donald Sutherland still haunts me!

My answer changes depending on what I've watched more recently. Also horror means different things to different peole so I'm never sure whether to make a distinction between horror films, ghost stories or films which could easily be seen more as science fiction etc. It's arguable few of the films on my list would actually "horrify" anyone but many undoubtedly have a creepy or unsettling atmosphere.
Here are the first 10 that sprung to mind listed chronologically.

-Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)
-Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) like Frankenstein this is arguably more science fiction than horror. Nevertheless a magnificent film.
-The Old Dark House (1932) The finest comic horror film made. "Have a Potato" Mr. Green
    -The Black Cat (1934)
    -Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
    -Night of the Demon (1957)
    -The Brides of Dracula (1960)
-The Innocents (1961) more psychological ghost story than what I would define as "horror". Undoubtedly the best film of it's kind.
    -The Devil Rides Out (1968)
    -Alien (1979)

Now as soon as I've written that I realised I can't limit it to ten and wished I could include The Omen (1976 obviously), Frankensten Must be Destroyed (1969), The Thing from Another World (1951)....

    Alien
    The Haunting
    An American Werewolf in London
    Evil Dead II
