First off I’m sorry if this is a re-thread.
While I wasn’t around in the 60’s to witness Dalekmania I find myself not much a fan of Daleks in general. I’ve always been drawn to Cybermen. Esp the classic Hartnell/Troughton episodes with the unsettledness voices. Anyone else a fan of Cybermen over Daleks? After all they did kill Adric... |

I think the Cybermen are creepier, especially in the 60's. In the 80's they got silly, but in the new series they are starting to regain their creepiness a bit.
I think I like Daleks a little better... but for me I like them relatively equally.
I have seen more classic Dalek story than I have Cybermen ones (4 compared to 2) but my first story of Doctor Who I watched was Rise of the Cybermen.
I can't really choose, they are both good... and the first time I saw a Dalek in Doctor Who they were fighting Cybermen (Doomsday) so for me they are tied.
But my one strike against the Cybermen, (and it's a big one) is that they killed Adric. *waits for the fire bombs*

| There was a time that I would say that R2-D2 was the ultimate in roll-y robot-ish bad a$$e$. Then I met my first Dalek. Sure Cybermen imprison you in a cold metal emotionless shell but Daleks are only interested in your total extermination. Daleks all the way. |

I think both the Daleks & Cybermen need something to give them an edge. They need to become a big threat again, not just a problem that the Doctor solves w/ his sonic screw driver in two hourly installments. Why not have the Cybermen take over someone elses world and the Doctor can't stop it? Maybe they conquer the Ice Warriors and claim Mars? Then we've got Ice Warrior/Cybermen to contend with?
Either that, or I would love to see a 'new' recurring enemy emerge in the next season. Just as Next Generation introduced the Borg (albeit Cybermen rip-offs) and DS9 had The Jem Hadar, I think the new series needs an enemy that it can call its own. Let the Daleks & Cybermen rest so they do not wear out their welcome.
They might have tried this w/ the Slitheen already, but it just didn't work and I hope not to see that enemy return anytime soon.

Of the two, I like the Cybermen better, since it seemed they were used less than the Daleks and their appearances were more special.
Not sure if that's true anymore.

Daleks, because they're the only one of the two that have featured in a #1 rated episode of Doctor Who. In fact, they're the only of the two to be used in two-parters whose second part has been rated higher than its first on each outing. That is, "Journey's End", "Evolution of the Daleks" and "Parting of the Ways" were all higher-rated than the first part of the story. Not so, the Cyber two-parters. "Age of Steel" lost on "Rise" and "Doomsday" merely held steady on "Ghosts".
And don't even get me started on the classic series, where "Tomb of the Cybermen" and "The Tenth Planet" are the only clear examples of a Cyber story improving on the ratings for the preceding serial, and where the ratings improved within the Cyber story itself.
But for me, although ratings are significant, the biggest deal is that Daleks are just frightening. The first time through on "The Daleks", "Frontier in Space", "Day of the Daleks", "Genesis of the Daleks", "Destiny of the Daleks", "Dalek" and "Parting of the Ways" and "Journey's End", I got a genuine adrenaline rush. I don't know HOW many times I've watched Journey's End, and each time I think, "Damn, the Daleks are just bad as HELL in this one."
I've never felt particularly frightened by the Cybermen, although I will admit that I might have been by "Tomb", had I seen that when I was younger. |

I like both really. When I was a kid though I thought the Cybermen were scarier simply because they could run upstairs and get you in bed. Even with the duvet pulled over your head! Nowadays I much prefer the Dalek stories but for a scary enemy Cybermen have it everytime. Yes the Daleks want nothing more than to kill you but Cybermen want to make you one of them! It's classic body horror. It's the same reason why Zombies are so scary I think. Yes they want to eat you. And then you become one of them. That's much more terrifying than something that simply wants to kill you as quickly as possible. |

It really says something about the greatness of Doctor Who that everyone is split over which iconic bad guy is a favorite. To have two is pretty incredible.
If you asked the question of which I'd like to see more of -- I would have to say the Cyberman because I would relly be interested in seeing the Doctor goto Mondas and maybe bump into the cybermen's equivalent of the Dalek's Davros. --Billy |

If you'd like to see the origin of the Cybermen, I would recommend that you listen to the Big Finish audio "Spare Parts". This is a fifth doctor story that takes place on Mondas and goes through how and why the humans on Mondas went on to become Cyberman. I would say that it would be the Cyberman equivalent of the "Genesis of the Daleks" story. Definately one of my top 5 Big Finish audios. |
