I think I'm on a losing battle here, "the unquiet dead" is my favorite anyway! How did it get beaten by "Rose"? How did "Father's Day" get beaten by "Rose"? How did "the end of the world" get beaten by "Rose"?

Yes, interesting at how varied our tastes are. I can't believe, for example, how anybody couldvote against the Empty Child/Doctor Dances which is one of my favourite stories in the classic and new series combined.
However, as a Literature teacher I must always remind myself that it is useless to argue over likes and dislikes. Nobody's personal taste can be wrong and this is just a bit of fun.
Isn't it? |

I noticed we all rather quickly eliminated The Long Game and the two Slitheen episodes...then our tastes diverted into blocks and it took much longer to whittle down the remaining seven.

When I started this thread, I had a pretty good idea what would be first and last but was unsure what would happen between. For the record here's how I see it:
1st: The Unquiet Dead
2nd: Dalek
3rd: Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
4th: Father's Day
5th: The End of the World
6th: Bad Wolf/The Parting of the ways
7th: Rose
8th: The Long Game
9th: Aliens of London/World War Three
10th: Boom Town
To me "The Unquiet Dead" is classic Who in the Gothic mould of "Talons of Wang-Chaing". Spooky monsters, excellent Charles Dickens.
"Dalek"! Well as seen elsewhere on this forum I have a special affinity with the Pepper pots, plus this was the first episode of the New series I managed to catch before discovering the Red Eye.
"The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" I don't dislike this story, but don't think it is anywhere as good as "The Girl in the Fireplace", "Blink" or even "The silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead". Why?
Well, I find the Barrage Balloon/Air Raid scene terrible, it is almost as ludicrus as the SUV going over the edge of the cliff in Jurassic Park. (Yes, can believe that there are dinosaurs, but the suspension of disbelieve crummbles at the thought of surviving the whole SUV/tree/fall scenareo).
Secondly, I hate the ending of the story and the heavy handed placing of the nano-bots to fix Rose's hands in Jack's ship. It seems like it is there just so the final explanation doesn't come out of the blue at the end. This is almost like one of RTD stories where he paints himself into a corner then goes how will I get out of this? (See below).
Father's Day - I really enjoy this one, even though the ending can be seen coming from miles away. The reaper SFX are on a classic series standard (i.e. cheap and rubbish ) Nice time travel story.
The End of the World. Good Solid Sci-Fi episode with aliens, robots, explosions and new good villain. what more could you want?
Bad Wolf/The Parting of the ways. Other than the last ten minutes of "Bad Wolf" and the first ten minutes of "Parting of the ways" (which are fantastic) I find the whole thing a bit tedious, with story resolution that smacks of "I cannot think how to get out of the situation I created". RTD suffers this problem at the end of every series. In my opinion, the end of Doomsday is the only series finale that he managed to pull off in a satisfactory manner. I hate "the last of the time lord" and find "journey's end" deeply unsatisfying after the superb "Stolen Earth".
Rose is just average, though I like the Autons.
The Long game is not too bad, some nice ideas but not outstanding.
Aliens of London/World War Three, glad to see I wans't the only person who doesn't really like the Slytheen very much and find this over long (and a little boring)
Boom Town - as per Aliens of London but with even less excitement. |

For me the results are spot-on except for Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways. I tried to get it to #1 but hardly anyone backed me up.
For me it had everything. The first episode was humorous and sinister. The second episode kept on building to a climax on such a scale that it blows the classic episodes out of the water.
And then there's the most emotional scene in Doctor Who history that almost had me in tears.
Oh well, each to their own. |

I think this would have been better if the two-part stories had been kept seperate.
Don't get me wrong, I love the new series, but many times we've had a wonderful first episode on the two-parter only to have to come back with a "less than satifying" conclusion in the next episode.
When you have a weaker conclusion that will bring down the story as a "whole" when you use the coupling as opposed to the individual episodes. I hate to say it, but this happens quite a bit in the "Russell T. Davies era" |

NotTom,
I kind of agree with you, however for all the other Doctors we have rated the complete story, not the episodes.
For one, I kind of think it is no good building up a great scenario, if you can't end it satisfactorily. There are no cases, I can think in new Who where the first episode was weak but was concluded by a cracking second part. |
