BRAIN OF MORBIUS 3 and 4

Okay I’ve been hard on Sarah. In ep3, she’s very brave trying to find her way to warn or save the Doctor while she’s blind. She also makes the use of every opportunity she has to lock Solon away, make her getaways, and find the Doctor. The story moves along but there are far too many scenes of Solon pontificating. That Maren saves the Doctor is a nice gesture, a sacrifice. The Doctor kills Solon it would seem. He also acted stupid, trusting Solon far too much in all the episodes, trusting his advice on Sarah’s blindness, trusting him to disconnect the brain without staying to see if Solon would do it. Is he just dumb? Anyway, all kidding aside, this is a good story and the dialog is good, funny, and makes sense. The Time Lord wrestling is interesting and I don’t mind that the faces are supposed to be the Doctor’s…it could be explained away as the Other (see or read the New Adventures). The production team made it so that it was supposed to be other Doctors before Hartnell. Fans explain it as Morbius’s faces. I must say before I knew about fandom, I thought the faces were supposed to be Morbius’s. Mary Whitehouse came up against this story but in fact, it is pretty gruesome. I guess I never noticed it because…well, because it all seemed so fake and phony. I mean any non fan that sees this takes one look at the monster Morbius and says, “Nice monster.” Sarcastically. And as silly as some of the monsters in Irwin Allen shows can be, one can’t really fault the designs of the LOST IN SPACE giant Cyclops, the Merman like creature used in VOYAGE’s MENFISH and LOST’S A CHANGE OF SPACE.

DW fans sometimes believe the Morbius monster is a well made costume when really it looks cheap and silly. Doctor Who IS NOT …correction, back then WAS NOT all about the monsters. Anyway, a brain hits the floor in goo, Solon shoots Condo and we see lots of blood and the blast on his stomach, the monster chokes Condo to death and Condo’s body struggles for some time before dying. Ditto a Sisterhood female. Previous DW production teams did not want to show females dying. It is all quite gruesome. Sarah talks about drinking themselves to death…the Doctor gases Solon. Etc. NOT children’s tv stuff.

This is so more entertaining than the story before it and yet moves DW along into uncharted STAR TREK like territory but being almost totally cut off from Earth. This changes in the next story and then…it’s away from present day Earth for a very long time. The current show can learn a great deal from this story and the stories following it. Unfortunately I detect the new show will continue in the same vein for some time…and why not? It’s given them ratings if not great stories. I hear UNIT and Martha are about to return…yawn.
