Okay is this like the perfect template for any Doctor Who Story? My answer is yes. Strange beginning, tour of TARDIS, a new console room, we find out more about the TARDIS. Which crashes. Which brings something evil to the past in Italy. IN ITALY! And for once, the locations look fantastic. We meet all the main guest charaters: Guiliano (who’s father has just died under mysterious circumstances), his sinister uncle—Count Fredrico, his “friend” Marco (who if any Doctor Who guest characters were in love…), Hieronymous (court astrologer who is in league with the Count), the laughing Helix energy entity itself (and in two quite horrific murders of victims we see two charred, burned crispy bodies), and…the Count’s main squeeze, uh, guard captain.

Add to that a companion who gets knocked unconscious, kidnapped, and about to be sacrificed, you have the template for many, many DW’s for the future. Not to say it is bog standard, it’s not. It’s quite nice to look at and listen to and sets up the rest nicely. There’s some action (horse play this time) and some humor (as the Doctor describes Sarah to peasants, the guards come up behind him on horseback, he puts an apple on the captain’s sword point; the Doctor makes fun of Hieronymous) and definite danger to the world set into motion.

The cliffhanger may seem lame by today’s standard but that’s because so many Doctor Who stories, CLASSIC AND NEW, steal from it. The Doctor’s about to lose his head. This episode is GREAT Doctor Who for its set up and for its inspiration. This seems to hold up for most of the three coming eps but we shall see more on that later…

Oh and as usual Tom is speaking up, not like his muttering in Seeds of Doom 5 and 6
