Truth be told I’m not a huge fan of this story if not the individual sequences. Watch for much Tom Baker going through door acting and sequences. I always thought it strange that they were bombing a nuclear power plant themselves to destroy an alien who could suck energy. I guess the Doctor thought the same thing. Anyway this really all works thanks to Lis Sladen and Tom Baker’s interplay, much of it ad libbed. The “I worry about you” sequence is just so much fun.

The other short scene I love is when they first meet Eldrad and the Doctor introduces Sarah Jane and says, “Say hello the lady, Sarah,” and we pan from the Doctor to Sarah Jane’s wide eyed face and she puffs out “HI,” fearfully. That is just very funny and most people seem to miss it or maybe it’s just me who appreciates it for more than it is to others.

Poor Dr Carter. And the man who plays Dr Watson is soooo good that he almost overshadows Tom Baker in his performance. He actually is better than he has a right to be in this part. He even gets his own cliffhanger and while he’s not attacked by a Zygon, a disembodied head, the brain of a Time Lord in jar, a Krynoid pod, a Cyber Mat, a robotic Mummy, or even knocked off a scaffold, it really works because, I, for one, care about the man.

It’s all very CHINA SYNDROME in a way. The lady playing Eldrad is quite good, too and I always thought in the 70s it strange that they allowed this body suit and the androgynous look and voice. Very alien, at least to most of the 1970s.

All the goobldygook about the Tardis circuits and no one being able to hurt the other in the interior: since when? WHAT?

And then the Doctor says he cannot break the law of time by bringing Eldrad to the past. At least that crap explanation works here in that the Doctor could be lying but for the show overall, it really doesn’t hold water. More on that with Adric’s death. I feel it would be more dramatic if the Doctor knows because he’s tried to go back and go back and go back and change things his way and it almost never works. Sometimes it is slightly better, sometimes it is not. The truth be told, he goes back into his own past or the past …to him….and he’s always saving people and never bothers about some law. But if there’s a reason for the law or if it is a law of time rather than of Time Lords.

The story as is just about holds together until they get off Earth and go to Kastria. Some fans don’t like the Kastria bits but I’m glad they get off Earth and go someplace else…
