More action as the cliffhanger continues and back when I first saw this, I really thought Litefoot could be killed off, the payoff for all the other stories that killed off important guest stars such PYRAMIDS OF MARS and ROBOTS OF DEATH and others. It made the world of DW not feel safe. I also expected…even hoped that Jago would be killed off. Anyway Leela gets a whole episode to have her own adventure and for once, it seemed as if the companion was just as important as the Doctor. There’s that rat again and yes, it looked better in ep1 than it does here but whatever, again, it’s not the effects that this show is about. More plot going on and bits of talk between Chang and Weng Chiang as well as the Doctor and Litefoot but none of it seems slow or dull and that’s due to good performances and the motions of the actors as they move about the stage. I like the boat part and Tom Baker is in top form, given this pretty good script. Yes, as always there are discontinuities and things that don’t make sense (see ABOUT TIME for those…and there are many) but this just feels so right and entertains so well. The story also doesn’t …I don’t know…put down the viewers as I feel the new show doses in large does with junk like RUNAWAY BRIDE, PARTNERS IN CRIME, and NEW EARTH. There’s danger afoot in the many villains and monsters that lurk and this is felt wholeheartedly. And Leela gets another great cliffhanger. And screams. And not for the first time. In ep1 she can be heard to scream when surrounded by five Chinese Tong killers! The location shooting in this episode is just perfect.

You have to remeber that when the story was being aired, the BBC had planned to make a series based on Jago and Lightfoot.

The idea might have worked if it hadn't been too closely connected to "Doctor Who". but even then two Victorian Londoners solving crimes - Arthur Conan Doyle did a better job.

The DVD text says that that rumor was not true that the writer didn't have any serious plan to make a series.
