So...I know that the concept of the companion in danger is part and parcel of Doctor Who - no question there.
However, I do find it interesting that in seemingly *every* 9th Doctor episode aired so far, the Doctor says something to the effect of "I'm supposed to protect her, she's only 19!". "Dalek" made this very clear, when the Doctor is forced to choose between saving Rose and saving all of Utah.
What do people think? Is the "Companion Is About To Die" (read with your best "Gauntlet" video game voice) thing more or less pronounced that it has been in past seasons of the show?
Or, is it instead the Doctor's reaction that is more pronounced?
I don't really mind it, but it did pop out at me...

Well ye old "Companion in Danger" plot device goes back right to the Hartnell Days. It is a formula that all the Doctor's of had, with some companions getting more into trouble than others. Some are more screamers than otthers too.

I guess it goes back even further than that to the old silent movies of "damsels in distress" being tied to rail road tracks and such.

'The Perils of Pauline' was the one in the silent movies.
Along with that also came the idea of the 'cliffhanger' and the Saturday morning cimema for kids.
High Ho Silver and away!

I could end up going back to check, but doesn't The Doctor have a agreement with Rose's mother that he will protect her and not let her come to any harm and thats why he keeps on repeating that line through the series and thats what he means.
Personally... the Daleks can have Utah and blast it off the face of the universe, but leave Billy alone or they'll be answering to me and millions of other Who fans the jumped up little pepper pots |

I believe it was in World War Three that Jackie (Rose's mum) asks the Doctor if he could guarantee Rose's safety, but the Doctor could not, and would not answer her.
