SPOILER SPACE AS FOLLOWS for the US AUDIENCE
Hello all:
I finally got a chance to sit down and watch Parting of the Ways and I was quite impressed, interesting episode, concepts and acting all around. A few specific things I thought about:
1) The Dalek army leaving the ships was creepy (in an old school Dr. Who sorta way)...the fact that those beasts can fly now makes them more scary.
2) I thought Billie Piper did a good job as far as acting---I mean don't get me wrong, I think she does a fine job as a companion, is cute, but I think the writers gave her a bit mroe to chew on
3) Captain Jack...nice job on setting up some potential future tension between him and the Doctor...especially since they made a point of Jack expressing his trust of the Time Lord in the face of taunts by the Dalek Emperor.
4) I think the most significant and interesting part of the episode was the exploration of the heart of the TARDIS/Rose transformation. It is obvious the writers were playing around with the notion of what a God is (which has always been the case since the Doctor meddles in things for good and bad)..but I thought this time it was very sophisticated how they shaped Rose's temporary connection to the heart of the TARDIS. It seems clear that the writers were possibly insinuating that this heart is A GOD, the GOD, or GODLIKE in it's ability to be and know all. This is something that could have some interesting implications for the show in the future.
5) Lastly, I kinda liked how the Doctor had a superfast "pop" regeneration. In the past, notably with the Baker and Davison regenerations, it was presented as a cocoon concept and morph. This time was much more phoenix like.
So what did those who saw this for the first time think? |

While I am sure I am greatly in the minority here, I really hated Parting of the ways. It very nearly ruined the entire season for me. I was so excited going into the episode that the hand of God twist just killed it. Now I have only seen it once, when it aired here in the states so I might have missed something but having the TARDIS able to enter someone and grant them Q or God like power was just too much. I think I am missing the whole bad wolf reference also. Not sure why the TARDIS would call itself bad wolf. I can see where some power has been subtlely directing the Doctor through time and space so he would be in the right place at the right time to help things work out, but if it can grant the power to just wipe away an entire Dalek army with just a wave, well kinda makes it hard for anything to really be a threat. I dont know, maybe I am missing something really key but for now I am very disappointed with the episode.

The TARDIS is not calling itself "Bad Wolf". Rose is.
Rose, the girl in the red riding hood (you know, the hoodie) used the "Bad Wolf" reference to tell herself what to do when the time came.
And of course it worked, because it did lead her to ignore the Doctor's instructions, and to get the TARDIS back to him, at whatever cost.
Yes, it was perhaps the most literal use of "Deus Ex Machina" I've ever seen, but it worked.
If you saw the Next Generation episode in which the guy wiped out an entire species universe-wide due to rage, you'd know that science fiction does allow for god-like powers.
It worked for me.

Actually, even predating "Q" is Tralane from the 1967 Star Trek episode The Squire of Gothos... which I suspect was probably part of the Q Continuum as well.

| I have to disagree with you a little Sean, I think it was the TARDIS that was calling itself Bad Wolf and not Rose. I did catch that Rose was wearing the red hoody but then if she was bad wolf it doesn't make sense. And as for sci fi shows not being reality based, I do not mind suspending belief I just do not want the cheap fix. I have always thought the Doctor prevailed by using his wits. I guess for me it is like what Louis has said recently about the Scooby Who episodes that he did not enjoy. While I have not seen these yet, "Parting of the Ways" did not feel like Doctor Who at that point. Aside from that though I have really enjoyed the season, I think overall everything has been very well done and entertaining. I just wish Scifi would pull whatever they use for a head out of you know where and announce the second season before we end up with Mansquito 2 the new brood or something just as lame. |
