personally i don't have a problem with the duration. i like the relaxed nature of the podcasts, but i fear that cutting it for the sake of it (as others have already mentioned) may put it in danger of being slightly more regimented and less FUN!
but hey, at the end of the day just do what's easiest for you guys. just thought i'd throw in my two cents... |

[Quote by: Linquel] I personally don't mind the marathon podcasts. As has been mentioned, that just means there's more to love. I do realize, though, that having cable Internet means large podcasts are no problem for me to download. I don't know how many of the listeners have dial-up, ISDN, or other slower connections.

Perhaps this could be the subject of the next Poll?
ie connection speed or type.

Sorry to follow myself - but just checked the 'Polls' page and this was done last 23/11 ? Is that 23rd Nov this year?

Anyway Broadband was up to 70% then.

PS- Ever thought of doing a live show with live listener contributions during the show, and interaction before and after the show? |
|
Hi Ross,
Actually we already did a show exactly like that back in March. We did a live recording of Doctor Who: Podshock at I-CON 25 (convention) in Stony Brook, NY. We had a small audience of 25-30 people, and we took live questions right from the audience. Ken and I were there in person and James was there live via the net being pumped through a loud speaker (under the table). We also had an interview with Paul Scott Aldred of the US Branch of UNIT speaking about the then upcoming Doctor Who special event which took place in May in MA. Also coincidentally, we had some discussions with the audience concerning the 1996 Doctor Who video movie in which we promised we would do a full episode on, which happens to be the latest Podshock released this very evening.
Most likely we will be back at I-CON again in Spring of 2007 and we can do another live show. So anyone that may be attending the convention this year, can attend another live recording of Doctor Who: Podshock.
Cheers,
Louis |

It was the 23rd of November of last year... the 23rd of November has not yet happened this year --- yet... well, time is all relative for a Timelord.
Basically it means the poll was active until that date. I could re-active the poll, but it would probably stay the same or broadband numbers will increase since day by day more and more people get broadband. Once you get broadband, you don't go back to dial-up. But is is still a valid concern for those listeners downloading our podcast via dial-up connections.

Well, I did. But you have no idea how royally pissed off I was at AT&T. I went from 100+ channels of digital cable television and broadband internet access to 8 broadcast TV stations and 31.2kb dial-up, all because I vowed to never give AT&T another dime of my money. It wasn't until AT&T sold the cable division to Comcast that I went back to broadband. AT&T just bought my local phone provider, but as it happens I had already dumped them for Vonage so I didn't have to go back on my word.

Oh yes- I remember that now! Sorry, forgot you'd already done a show like that.
The reason I was asking though, was that another podcast I listen to has recently done a live podcast via skypecast where listeners could join in a conference style conversation prior to the show with the presenters and other listeners. During the show they were muted until such time that they had the listener questions. Once again, after the show there was the conference conversations.
Kind of like a real-time, international live podcast! Which would obviously be released later as per normal.
Or is that just crazy talk?
Regards,
Ross |

I like crazy talk... I like the idea as well. We need to look into it further and see what we may be able to do for a future show. Thanks for the suggestion.

Louis,
I loved the latest podshock, and the way you did the latest news up front. The Mark Ayres interview was fascinating and the news was up to date.
I still think you would lbe doing yourself a big favour if you put the news out as a seperate file, it can still be on the same feed. That way you could have all of you commenting on the news and still have time to do your best job on the less time-sensitive material.

Thanks Steve... Actually you must have been reading my mind just now because I was actually thinking of doing something along the lines of exactly what you stated... Being that there has been so much news that occurred between recordings, I was thinking of catching up with it all by doing smaller Aftershock episodes to catch up on it all.
We will see what happens.

One of the more recent podcasts had a listener saying (more or less) that you guys should just let the length of the shows be what they need to be on a show by show basis.
I'm all for that. I enjoy this podcast so much! None of it is wasted time to me. You guys are fully entertaining and informative. I listen to other Who podcasts and frankly none come close. I love that it's long as I can use it to entertain myself for two separate workout sessions. That treadmill never looked so good now that I have the podshockers. You guys have a very good chemistry going!
I only wish that there were more female voices on your show. Just a little estrogen to mix it up a bit?! More female guests? There must be other women out there who like the Doctor....
Keep up the good work. |

Thanks for the kind words. As you can tell from the most recent podcast, number 57 which includes the Jon Pertwee interview, is an extended one coming in at the 2 hour marker. I did think about spinning off the Torchwood content out of that episode and making it a separate Aftershock episode... but since we reference to it throughout the podcast, I thought it would be better to just keep it in (although there are no clips from the episodes we reviewed in it).

I agree. We have Ashlee (AKA "TripleB") as one of our Australian Corespondents, but it has been ages since we have heard from her last (well, since August actually). We should touch base with her and see if would like to do another segment soon.
The welcome mat is always there for her and as always others that would like to be contributors to the podcast.
I am behind in editing the next podcast, but I suspect it will be another jam packed episode going into "extra innings" or "overtime" (I am so sports illiterate, so forgive me if I am fouling this up)... We haven't received any complaints about the length of the most recent episode, hopefully the same will hold true for the next if indeed it is that long.
Cheers,
