In the 'General Club Matters Forum 'theangler' (welcome as a newer poster) said:-
'I did catch some Eccelston reruns on BBC Three last week when I was in England and School Reunion played on the flight back to the States. Nice to see Sarah Jane again; she was my favorite companion.'
Just wondered how you enjoyed seeing the episodes without breaks - rather than on American TV - and did you notice if these versions were different ie. no cuts to fit time slots?

| daveac- I'm not qualified to answer your question since I've never seen any of the new series episodes before. I don't have the SciFi channel or cable, so my viewing is confined to getting the DVDs when they are released. I deduce from your question that the SciFi channel must be inserting commercials. I think I would find that just too annoying to tollerate. Cuts to fit time slots!? They do that? Oh my. What I did like about the BBC Three "reruns" is the BBC Confidential feature afterward where they interview the actors and producers. Nice. |

Yes a lot of the US forum members seem to find the breaks/cuts really spoil the show. I'd just thought you may have been in the position to judge from your trip over here.
Hopefully others will chime - (is that a cloister bell I hear?) - in.

The most annoying thing about Sci-Fi channel is those @#$@#%@#%!**@$@!#!!!!!! pop-up ads. (Insert your favorite expletives in the designated space.) The commercials are annoying too - but it's the pop-ups, which can deter your attention to the story, that is the real problem. |

My favourite expletives require much more space than that  . Personally I can't watch anything properly with US advertising schedule. I have to watch Doctor Who or BSG off the DVR where I can skip the adverts. BTW is anyone watching BSG in Hi-Def on Sundays on Universal HD, it looks super (except in moments of extreme action when their bitrate is too low and it pixelizes. (Looks good on HD DVR is what I mean) - especially our new 60" Sony.)

Well, having seen Season 1 both on DVD and the TV, I'd say "it depends on the break". There are some that are good and some that are just rather pointless. One that was relatively good, I thought, was in "Rose". There, the first act break, if I recall, was just after the Henrick's explosion when Rose ran away from the department store and the camera caught a glimpse of the TARDIS for the first time. Now, I'm not sure that would've meant so much to a truly first time viewer. But for a DW fan, it was a nice cut.
Overall, though, they don't achieve the same thing as a North American commercial break—that is, providing a cliffhanger to make the audience return after the break. I've long believed that BBC Worldwide missed the boat by not ordering a few extra insert scenes be filmed so that the show could be recut for viewing in a commercial environment, so at least there was some chance of the narrative flowing more naturally over ad breaks. It would, it seems to me, have made the series a little easier to sell to commercial networks if the show appeared to be formatted for such audiences. |

| From my time over there I was quite happy that the British shows weren't cut for ad breaks. I remember Dangermouse being the only thing you could watch in the relative security that they couldn't shoehorn a few commercials in between the end of the show and the closing credits because David Jason kept babbling on well into the end credits. It always brought a smile to my face to think of the poor editorial staff poised with their fingers over the "commercial break button" and then thinking "Ahh sh*t, he's talking over the credits again!" |
