I think the writing is not very good. I'm sorry. It seems to play to the lowbrow end of things. I said it in another thread, but some four letter words and sex doesn't make an adult show. |

Yes, of course, adding those things don't make an "adult" show, but they do make a "realistic" show. People talk that way. People act that way. It's just not portrayed much on TV, because of the legislated censorship most countries force upon its TV broadcasters.

I disagree. I have no issue with the language at all, but I don't think that lesbian snogging and self pleasuring to security cameras reflects reality. Sure, there are tons of late night encounters in the bathrooms of clubs, but I maintain that there were things in the episode that were placed there just to raise eyebrows and not to reflect reality. |
|
On the contrary. Those things are all too real. We just don't usually see them on TV, but then again in the US we have no concept of "post-watershed" TV and all TV is restricted in many ways.
It's one of the nicer things I like about UK TV. It can go places US broadcast TV is too scared to go because of right-wing organizations that flood the FCC with complaints the second a square-inch of skin is shown - but they are silent when murder after murder is depicted, no matter how gory.
Thankfully at least the Cable channels have more leeway, (though I don't pay for extra channels so I miss out.)
Puritans living with sexual repression that goes back hundreds of years.
Personally, I'm glad to see that Torchwood is open to showing gritty reality, all the while showing the most fantastical NON-reality there is.
A good mix. Can't wait for the next episode...

The Rebuttal Witness:
Well, I'll give you the violence issue and how there is a double standard when it comes to that in America, especially, but I still don't concede that the majority of security guards are wanking to their security tapes. And in my post, I meant to say NON-lesbian snogging. Of course lesbians snog. In my experience, straight women only make out with each other to get guys excited.
You're also right about Cable.America has more than it's share of cable shows that show reality the way it is. I refer to the Shield, the Sporanos, Nip-Tuck, I'll even throw in NYPD blue, which is not cable. These all have realistic violence, nudity, racial issues, etc, but never do I feel like I am watching a Troma film. I maintain that the sex in Torchwood was done to raise eyebrows and for shock value, not for realism. As I just stated, you can do nudity and the like without saying "hey, kids, wanna see these two women make out?" Just because I think that it could have been done better doesn't mean I am a puritan with sexual repression. I'm no prude and what I saw on screen certainly didn't offend me. It DID make me feel like I was trying to be shocked. Even by British television standards, on which I've seen lots of genitals. You know, America has it's share of shows that attempt to shock and titilate as well, I'm not saying RTD is reinventing the wheel.
I suppose my largest complaint about Torchwood is that I feel like in episode 2, the story took a backseat to the "shock" elements, and ended up suffering. The third episode will a true test to see if the story is the most
important thing. I like the show as well, I just don't feel like the stories I have seen hold a candle to the good Doctor's.
But I am glad you like the show, and I am also glad that we are free to discuss our opinions here with civility and that conversations like this don't devolve into flaming. That's what makes our little community so great. |

Well I was seriously reserving judgement. So I was ready to turn off at a moment's notice.
Episode 1) A good start, an excellent ending, totally exceeded my expectations and set a bar.
Episode 2) Felt a little purile at times, BUT, that was not crucial as I felt the humanity of the situation was well played and the character development was well placed.
Episode 3) If it's like this next week I will turn off. While I appreciated the better theme and the less purile nature of the third episode I felt that it was badly scripted, often wasted the actors talents and did not live up to the production, direction and writing values of the first two.
And I'm reserving judgement on the cro-barring of a scantily clad cyber woman in the next episode. It may just turn me off permanently. |
