Inferno is one of the first Doctor Who episodes that I was back in the early '80s and I'm rewatching the episodes on DVD and, boy, am I impressed. I know that the special effects look horrible, but there is something about Inferno that captured my imagination. Some of the Pertwee episodes were filled with an undercurrent "save the Earth" theme and I find that interesting to look back so many decades later, comparing what the planet is like now to how innocent life appeared then.
The story is a classic Who with lots of tension, monsters, and good conflict between a "mad" scientist whose ego won't stop him from persuing his dreams and the Doctor's level-headedness.
Anyone else have great memories of seeing Inferno? |

You didn't mention.....spoiler space...
That this story involves an alternate Earth facing destruction........ring any bells?.....Series 2?

| 'Inferno' was the first Jon Pertwee story I ever saw. I didn't realize, at the time, that the 3 preceeding stories weren't included in the syndication package. But it was a great story, although Channel 11 in Chicago split it over 2 consecutive Sundays. |

| Pertwee episodes are included in most of my favorite episodes. This one was no exception. Though I hated the terrible looking creatures, I though the story was good and love the concept of alternate version characters as long as it's not overdone. When every other episode in DS9 was an alternate universe story, I got very tired of it quickly. |

| Not to hijack the thread or anything, but that's a huge exaggeration. There was one alternate universe story per season on DS9, excluding the first. That's six episodes out of around 150. And they weren't one-off "hey look at me in the alternative universe" deals. Each story built on the last until it became apparent that the whole thing was a fairly elaborate subplot (in a series that was already laden with subplots).
Growing from the simple question of whether alternate-Spock's 1967 decision was the correct one for that universe, it paid homage to the original series in a manner that even Enterprise rarely managed. More to the point, it developed and amplified the plots going on in the "real" universe. It shows us a lot about Kira and Sisko's relationships with partners that had died in the real universe, O'Brian's innate heroism, and the relationship of Quark and Rom to the Grand Nagus. Sure, there's some fun "vamping" by the "other" Kira, Ezri and Worf, but every story needs its villains, and they're pretty damned logical and well-acted ones. There's a reason for the vamping. It wasn't just "dress up and be evil time". It was, for me, one of the highlights of each season to see where the "plot over there" would take us next. Though you can certainly argue that, of the six, some were stronger and some were weaker, each did something to further plot or character on this side of the curtain, as much as it progressed an enjoyable plot on that side.
Until Rose was actually sucked into an alternative universe, I'm not sure that the "alternate" concept had ever been used for such dramatically well-rounded purposes—outside, perhaps, of DC Comics' "multiverse". |

it was also my first jon pertwee story.
